90 Rangie just stopped, started. stopped again.
My 90 Rangie (good condition) ran a little rough a couple of days back (just a little rough); yesterday it simply stopped (in heavy traffic - damn); eventually started again after a few minutes, ran OK for few KM than stopped again and again eventually started.
Got home but not game to take it out as it'll almost certainly stop again.
Almost certainly fuel but maybe electrics - where would you suggest I start looking please?...................lennardj......

SubscriberFor what its worth, Ihad a car years ago that did this and I found a large growth of slime in the fuel tank. It would get sucked up to the pickup and block it partially or fully. Drained and cleaned the tank and problem gone. Hope yours is simple. Jim

Mine would cut out, then start a few minutes later, just to stop again after a minute or so, until the battery went flat (happened on the steepest part of Mt. Terrible).
Bad connection from the battery to the alternator i think it was, causing the electronic ingnition module to cut out. A bad earth would do the same i guess.

SubscriberLennard - I had a 90C that did that for months - local mechanic replaced bits all over the place - no fix- turned out to be $45 cold start sensor - 10 minutes later problem solved... mind you when it would restart after cooling down a little, a LOT of smoke would appear because the thing was running as rich as it could..

3rr ,what is a "Cold start Sensor" For $45, you probably mean the engine coolant temp sensor ? perhaps the the Fuel Temp sensor? even the bypass air valve (IAC) .
Problem solved ? when it cools down a little a LOT of smoke etc etc . Now thats some problem solving !!!

SupporterI think the cold start sensor sits on the side of the plenum (drivers side) held by two screws and spurts fuel directly into the chamber for cold temp starts. It has a couple of wires to it.

A 90 should have 14CUX on a 3.9.
The key richness sensor is the engine temperature sensor near injector no2( ie front of RH bank). If this has died then the engine will "have the choke on" all the time.

How many k's? If it's +160,000 it's probably the fuel pump - I've just done my 2nd RR pump, both went at 160,000 k's. On my 4.6 P38 you can swap the pump out for a Holden pump, don't know whether you can do this on the Classic - works well, but when you refit, watch out for stirring up sludge in the system. I replaced my pump and then started losing power, turned out to be a blocked fuel filter (aluminium cannister under the body close to driver's door) - easy fix and all good.
Fuel pump starts and then stops with increasing frequency until it stops completely. The other issue could be the Crank Positioning Sensor (CPS), this tends to malfunction when it gets hot, then the car cools down it will restart and perform as normal until the CPS gets hot again - when the car stalls, pour water over the CPS and try and restart - if it fires up, chances are its the CPS
