    Jointing compound preferences? good/bad products

hey guys looking at doing some work on the old girl over the next few days and my haynes manual refers to jointing compounds but doesnt go into any detail.

Anyone got any good or bad experiences with certain products. im looking at doing the hub seals and injectors so will need some for the plenum chamber.

    thanks in advance

    silicone

do not use silicone based sealants near the fuel system ever,ok for oil ,but no good near fuel, non hardening sealant on manifolds etc, stag can be used on threads that require sealing except head studs ,non hardening sealant again

ATV blue can be gotten at supercheap, repco, autobarn, occasionally kmart tyre and auto, auto one, bunnings sometimes stock a similar product, proper service stations and probably a few other places besides.

My local supercheap has all but the Stag, I get that from either Ipswich truck parts, repco or Autobarn if I order it in.

I generally use non hardening aviation sealant on almost everything with a paper gasket. Never had an issue with it.

On rubber type gaskets I use a german product called Drei Bond.. you can get that from any BMW dealer- I don't know how much it is though.. could be expensive. This stuff is awesome, obviously don't go overboard with it though or it'll go everywhere and you'll smell like salt and vinegar chips for days.

I personally hate using bluemaxx. It is the biggest PITA to get off when you have a failure, goes everywhere and doesn't keep all that well. I've been using three-bond gasket maker where I don't have a gasket. It is good for use with LPG also which is handy. It is a grey coloured sealant- comes out quite thin but thickens up very quickly, good gap filling properties and relatively easy to work with (wear gloves!!!!).

    quick point...

read the warnings on the goops, they will tell you what you can and cant use them near, be wary of any that are not plastics safe, these typically contain a compound that attacks lots of things including the rubber diaphragms in pressure sensors (think AAP, MAP)

the ATV that is rated for use on EFI fuel systems will do for all of what you need on a V8. that said.

In my goops tray I have

    hylomar #3
    hylomar #4
    Stag
loctites 243,262,567,577 620,690, 401,404, and some other ones I dont use much
    nickle anti-seize, copper anti-seize, silver anti-seize
    bearing blue
    electrical tape in a can
    electrical contact grease

the green ones are the ones I use the most.
