a full axel swap is starting to sound better and better. what year did they change the rangies and discos over to 24 spline? same time they changed to metric?
cheers for the help lads, Andy.

So I did this job about a month ago on my '82 RRC.
I had an '84 rear axle housing assembly fitted with a provision for a maxi drive. This housing has the shocks opposing one another. I bought a Discovery 1 rear axle housing with a maxi drive diff, axles and flanges installed.
What you need to do, is strip the housing bare. So that's stub axles and hubs off. You can keep your calipers- they fit disco rotors. Swap stub axles, hubs, bearings, drive flanges and rotors from a 24 spline setup. Then you'll be right.
You CANNOT fit 24 spline axles directly into your housing- the hubs are a tiny bit shorter (like 5mm) and so are the stub axles. You can see this from the wheel bearing nuts. In early cars they sat outside the hub face where in later models the nuts were almost inside the hub.
So to re-iterate what you need to convert your axle housing to 24 spline:
1. Diff
2. Axles
3. Hubs
4. Stub axles
5. Bearings
6. Rotors
7. Drive flanges
8. Drive flange bolts (they are different thread)
You can reuse your calipers :)
yes! thats the info i was looking for, thanks mate that helps alot!
