converting to 24 spline, what do i need?

hi all. i have a 1980 2 door and im in the prosses of making it a off road beast, the gearbox/t.case will be getting a rebuild so the weak point in my drive line will surley be the diffs/halfshafts. idealey id just like to swap over diff centers and halfshafts (rebuilding the diffs with arb air lockers) but wondering will the 24 spline rear halfshaft drive flanges bolt up to my rear hubs? and will the front halfshafts slide in to my c/vs? failing that will the 24spline compatible c/vs fit in the front hubs? and failing all of that, will the front and rear 24spline compatable hubs fit my axel?

hopefully one of you range rover gurus will have experiance with this. i know the easyest thing would be to do a full axel swap but dont really want/have room for two big dirty axels lying around at this moment in time.

    Cheers, Andy

I have a complete diff in housing and driveshft(no rubber donut, it was stuffed) no idea what it's worth and it needed new wheel bearings
but it's out of a 98 D1 anyway let us know if you were interested as it's just taking up space for me

I funny enough I put a ~83 RRC housing(maxi-drive centre and axles) into my d1

Heh thats what I get for posting when 1/2 asleep

    it's a Rear out of 98 D1 which would make it a 24 spline

seems a lack of info on this,
I wanted to put a rear 24 spline locker & axles in my 88RRC but couldn't find enough accurate info if it would fit,
I first read that that 24 spline axle flange wouldn't bolt up to the 10 spline hubs, (imperial vs metric) also read that there was slight difference in axle length, so I bought a 10 spline locker, only to find when pulled apart someone had in fact put in a 24 spline diff & axles.

stood the 2 spline ends (24 vs 10) on concrete, looking at the seats of the flange, they looked to be the same length.

The 24 spline centre bolts straight on, all that was done to the 24 spline axles was the lip on the axles ground down (see my thread with pics)
(whoever done it should of machined them)
    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-...e-housing.html

Anyhow, i had already bought the 10 spline locker, so i fitted it, and the 10 spline axles.
The 10 & 24 spline axles bolted straight up to the rear hubs on my 88.

I have 24 spline front axles, cv's, even hubs for the front but cant find enough info if it will all bolt straight on to my 10 housing, so it's all still sitting there.
    cheers

I believe the imperial/metric change over happened around 83/84 as the brake calipers on this diff are all imperial while the disco was metric.

Ended up using the disco calipers to save having to swap brake lines which worked fine.

Funny the prop shaft I'm using is labeled as being from an 88rrc and the bolts that came with that were all metric

thats an interesting bit of info roverv8, so atleast i know ill be fine for the rear diff apart from whatever i need to machine off. i think it will be a case of trial and error in the case of what needs changing on the fronts. as for the rear axel from the disco distortion, i might be getting just a center and halfshafts from a rrc thats getting wrecked this weekend, if something goes wrong and i dont get it then i might just be intrested, but like youreself im not extatic about having a whole axel lying around. any ideas on what price youre looking for? iv got little coin at the moment so might be a while haha

    cheers, andy

    Welcome

    Hi Andy

    Welcome aboard to the forum.
Some time ago there was a booklet put out by Maxidrive, that listed all the axle types for Land Rovers.
I will keep a eye open for it, I know that it's here in this house somewhere.

as Distortion said there was a change over around 83/84,
yours being 1980 the rear hubs may not be the same as whats on my 1988,
Im not sure what they did & didn't change, bit of a headache.
sorry i can't help you more
