Brake fluid. I suggest you check all the parts of the brake system (and clutch system) for leaks, then bleed the systems with fresh fluid unto it all runs clear and free of bubbles. NB front brakes have two bleed nipples IMO.
Hello, This is my 1st post here. I have just purchased a 1982 2 door RR in reasonable orderbut have to sort out a few mechanical problems and would appreciate any advice or ideas as this is my 1st RR. I have only had the car started and driven around in large back yard.
1. Brake pedal has lots of travel and not much braking affect. I can think of many problems that might cause this, but is there a particular place peculiar to RRs that I should start with?
2. Gear shift: Seems heavy and hard to get into gear. Clutch pedal and clutch seem to work ok (at least getting off the car trailer). Again, is there a particular place peculiar to RRs that I should start with?
Many thanks, and Very Happy to be in the RR- Way!![]()

Which should both be bled at the same time.NB front brakes have two bleed nipples IMO.

2/ check/smell the oil in the main gearbox, someone may have put gear oil in it.
it should have auto tranny fluid in it.
ATF - even though it is a manual?
yep, Dextron 3 from memory. & in the t/c too.
but probably Castrol syntrans would be the go nowadays .
Anyway stick your finger in the hole & if it stinks like gear oil I'd dump it & fill it with ATF rather than spend $30 a liter on syntrans and hopefully it will shift like it is supposed to.
i assume its a 4 speed? which is a lt95, renound for not being to user friendly... ie noisey, not to easy getting into gear. but on the upside their a very strong box. re the atf? i was 99% sure its 20w50 engine oil used in the lt95? never heard of anyone useing atf in there. go to castrol.com and have a look at their lube guid, i dont have time at the moment, i am sure its 20w50 engine oil though? correct me if im wrong.
cheers, andy
I'm pretty sure an 82 is a 4 speed LT95.
If so you put engine oil in it and the transfer case.
Or someone will recommend a light gear oil.

Brakes: After you go thru the basics ( as mentioned before) and the brakes are still acting up, here's something I can up against when I owned an 82.
The front discs each have two circuits and two flexible hoses. I had one of those hoses disintegrate from the inside and clog up. Similar pedal. You should be able to tell the rough age of the flexible hoses by the condition of the spring wire sheath. In any case, a set of front hoses and the single rear brake hose, plus a set of caliper piston o-rings ( roughly $10 per wheel ) and a clean up of the calipers themselves is a probably a good idea anyway.
Dextron 3 ATF is just right for LT95,
or you can use the recommended engine oil .
The TC can use either but the oils mix thru the dodgy seal anyway so you might's well use ATF (or engine oil if you prefer) in both.
But DO NOT use EP90 etc Gear Oil
