I think their invoice to me was less VAT, but prices change all the time

The confusion about part numbers was not about the QAF which is listed for Defender etc, but is the same as RRC. Mine is anyway! Just google the QAF number and it shows for Disco, Defender etc but I can assure you fits RRC 4 bolt chassis with no changes. As for 3 bolt, you know about the imperial vs metric.

There was another number like STC XXXX which when I looked up was a reco box and I didn't want a reco box..

For my '83 I got a new box with fitted drop arm and adaptor kit from MR Automotive Land Rover Servicing Brisbane - Land Rover Spare Parts Brisbane - Welcome to MR Automotive, Redcliffe, Brisbane, Queensland for $1000ish. I could have done my usual mucking about with part numbers and so on but they had the adaptors with it and I didn't want to have to bother with that. (For a change.) I keep meaning to do a write-up about it.

The hoses went straight in, but required some farting about as the adaptor for the inlet on the box raises the hose up a bit and hits underneath the York aircon compressor. I got a new hose made up in the end. Otherwise, it all fit well.

But if I'd known about the manual box Brad has I would have been truly tempted! I've replaced the hoses, and decided to get a new pump while I was at it, and now I'm adapting a later reservoir as well, so that's a lot of time and money just for snazzy steering!

I purchased a 3 bolt steering box from wreckers who said it didn't leak.....had it fitted by local mechanic and wasted $195.00c (+ fitting) .....still leaks (not as bad as yours) and currently on my (bucket list) of things to do on my 81 RRC ........

Everything I have ever purchased from a wreckers was "good as new", "low milage" and so on......and in the end most things turned out to be stuffed!
Non moving parts or things that don't hold fluids are most likely the best buys at wreckers.

    Cheers, Mick.

thats interesting, though a bit more pricey than the others. did you manage to find p/s hoses for the car or did you have custom ones made for it? iv had custom p/s hoses made up for customers befour but their $$$.

is there anywhere that sells the thread adaptors or is that a DIY thing does anyone know?

    cheers, andy

Andy there is a hosey type place in buckingham drive I think. From memory on the left halfway up I cant remember the name, I have bought adaptors from them to suit the pipes on an auto rangie oil cooler.

Well, they had the whole kit so I just got it. If I'd in been in civilisation, (or at least Perth), I would have gotten the new box from somewhere and taken it and the old hoses to a hydraulics place and gotten the metric thread identified and asked for an adaptor, or just gotten new hoses made up with the old fittings on one end and metric on the other. Also, this kit had the right bolts and later tie-rod. So it really saved me trying to find every little bit, which would have taken months up here.

I got the box-to-reservoir hose from England, (which is NOS and still has the date tag on it - 1979 I believe), and of course now it's in the car I'm wondering if it will be okay or if I should have gotten a new one made up.

My car had the reservoir-to-pump hose that had a banjo fitting with a long bit of pipe on it and then the hose, but I thought that stiff bit of pipe was probably having a lever effect on the banjo end as it always leaked. I got the short little earlier banjo fitting that just uses a hose, and bought some 5/8" ID hose to suit.

And the pressure hose from the pump to the box I had made up for an extortionate amount - nice job, but geez.

I've also found out how to fit a later plastic reservoir, as I just couldn't stop the leaks from the original tin can type. (In fact, I'm just on a tea break from doing that now.)

Do get new hoses made up. I used another old one temporarily and it blew, spraying ATF and almost causing a fire. Good thing it was just here in town and not out on the highway. I tell you what, with these cars it's just not worth it stuffing around trying to save a few bucks or a few hours. If it's not right, it's not right, and if you want an old Rangie to work then that's how it is. (He typed, banging head on wall repeatedly.)

I've really been meaning to do a thread on the steering box and reservoir, so feel free to send a PM reminder if you want as I'll probably forget again.
