    First rangie advice

Hi there, I'm looking to buy my first rangie. The one I'm looking at has done 290,000 kms (which is a fair bit), the owner has installed a new radiator, re-planed head and gasket. Is there anything to be wary of for a vehicle with such high k's, or should I look for one with less k's. Any advice is much appreciated.

    Callum.

It's a old car .... So it's not really about the K's ... It's more about how it presents itself /// visual Condition .... If it looks old n tired .... then that is what it is ... If it shines and looks good ... then that is a good base to work with.

I could list a bunch of things to look for ... But it is no different to buying any other used old ride .. basically lift things that cover and slide underneath it with a torch and look ... Pull the dipstick on the auto n motor and look around the brake booster

Either way ... Your gonna spend dollars

Start the motor from cold and listen for motor tappet rattles .... Drive it round the block till warm ...open the bonnet and listen for engine rattles

Best way to decide if it's a keeper is to have the owner accompany you on the freeway .... after 10k's at 100kph.. you will know if it is for you

    Cheers

Well as for the K's they stopped making the classic coming up to 20 years ago so even working on the average K's a year 200,000 is low average K's.

You don't say what year yours is.
But the most important thing to look for is rust. Pretty much everything else is easy to replace and easy to fix yourself. Not too many computers untill you get to the late ones.

Thanks for the info mike. I'm going to have a look at it tomorrow, i understand that i'll need to do self repair work which is fine. Sorry for leaving out the year reads, its a 1993 dual fuel.

Does it have ABS brakes .....

Look for the ABS pump near the brake booster
When you start the motor ... Look for the 2 orange lights on the dash ... Look for the Red ABS light

Pump sound from the pump should run for 30 seconds or less ......
Red ABS light and 1 of the orange lights should turn off when the pump stops ... The last orange light should go out when the car goes faster than 7kph

No lights should be ON when driving.......

Put the car in reverse and turn the steer wheel hard right or left .. Apply brakes and feel for "brake chatter" ....

Put the car in Drive and turn the steer wheel hard right or left .. Apply brakes and feel for "brake chatter" .... Brake chatter = $ to be spent on fixing the ABS system

If you felt Brake chatter and then the 2 orange lights came ON ... Then the brakes will be OK ... just that the Anti lock system is disengaged ... still needs fixing tho

If you feel brake chatter and No lights came ON then you run the risk of NO brakes .....

If you start the car and None of these lights operated ... Then ask Q's

NOTE .... This light sequence is from my 95 softdash ... So the 93 light sequence maybe different due to differences in dash setup ... However it should have the ABS light .... Someone might jump in and confirm this

Luckily I have no ABS on my 1990

    Cheers

check for leaking oil and brake fluid. Also the distance between the tyres and the guards. they have a tendency to drop on the drivers side. i assume your going to try and get her registered. they are the big ones to look for.

Possibly bushes too as they can contribute to steering play at higher speeds which can be scary!!!

Cheers for all the info guys, much appreciated
I had a look at it yesterday and it was looking a bit tired. But there was another rangie in the same area with 200,000 km's on the clock, plus the engine was overhauled 3 years ago. It just needs a bit of work done to the interior. I'll post a link for it: rangerover classic 3.9 auto pet/gas | Cars | Gumtree Australia Mundaring Area - Darlington

    Cheers callum.

that one on gumtree looks pretty good mate the zf and lt230 are a good combo. looks like all its missing is a spare wheel. just give it a good check for leaks and rust in the front foot wells and make sure the zf changes smoothly from 1-2 when the engine/gearbox is stone cold as it doesnt sound like the box had a overhaul befour it went in and they can block up the valve bodys and you have to rev the nuts of them to make it change.

    cheers, andy
