    early range rover vin numbers?

    hi there

i have a 1980 rrc and the only thing in the way of a vin number i can find is on a little alloy pannel but its only 8 numbers and 1 letter. im pretty sure thats not the vin as i thought they should have 12 didgets? i also read somewhere that they were stamped on the back of the chassis but cant find anything there. im starting to think theyre like the early landcruisers (pardon my french) and didnt have any?

also i was looking at a website with all the engine numbers on it an mine didnt seem to have enough letters in it, i can bearly make out that it says 8.15 or maby 8.13:1 above the number but my engine number doesnt come close to matching those cr's on the web site, if anything my engine number looks simelar to one that has 13:1 cr australian only engine.

    soooo confused

    cheers andy

    G`day ,

could be your 80 is earlier .

A vin with 8 numbers and a letter will suit 1975 and back , if it starts 355 or 356 (which say UK or Export RHD ) probably the case and if so the other 5 numbers tell what year it is .

The engine number will probably prefix 355 and if F suffix 8.13: 1 and if A,B,C or D will be 8.25: 1 and also 359 prefix.

If you give the vin and engine prefix and suffix , i can if you like tell what they say or if the above is clear just the 5 numbers of the vin , for the year .

    Hi Andy,

The vin / chassis number is stamped into the D/S chassis rail on the outside in front of the front axle.

The body has none, except for the alloy plate in the engine bay.

To be pedantic, early cars didn't have VINs. VIN was a US term for US-made cars and wasn't made a requirement for others until about 1981.

It would, however, have had a serial no.
