88 RRC Fuel pump HELP!!!

On my brothers 88 the pump was fine but it had a serious burn mark and nearly melted the connector where the pump leads connect to the pump holding plate. This had cause an intermittent missfire on long uphill climbs for years. We had always chased an ignition fault.

One day at my place it just stopped. Put in a new fuel pump as it was already 18 years old and has been fine ever since.

We did a test at the cold start injector hose using a fuel pressure gauge to determine this and it's an easy test. This will determine if you are keeping fuel pressure once it starts.

Justinc is 100% right !!why dont prople listen !its a 88 Flapper !
The only way to energise the pump is to be cranking the motor , or open the flapper gate .Just stick a screwdriver in the flapper holding the gate open a bit 1/8 inch is enough.Turning on the iignition without crankin does nothing !!.

can anyone who has done a fuel pressure gauge install put up some pics of the connection and how its been run through to the cabin? i am mildly challanged when is comes to mechanics if its not in the haynes or rave manual then im done!

First, find a fuel pressure gauge that will read up to 40psi. It will not be like an oil pressure gauge set up. Look in the test instrument section wherever you get your auto bits from.

Forget about routing it into the cabin. Small steps. Get the fuel pressure right whilst stationary.

Gently undo the cold start injector from the plenum, and then remove injector from the extension hose it's on. Insert gauge, use a jubilee clip to fasten as you want 36psi ( ish) Remember to replace injector into plenum (connector off)

If you need to go mobile, use a extra piece of EFI hose and a brass joiner (with jubilee clips) so the gauge sits outside the windscreen - like a street rod. That way you don't have to worry about fuel in the cabin. Carry a fire extinguisher - if you have it you won't need it.

The 'RRC' CD ( just checking you're not using the Post 94 CD commonly called RAVE as it's a different injection system) has the specs for flapper systems.

my bet is that the vacuum hoses for the fuel regulator aren't connected or the replacement Commodore fuel pump is the low pressure version. An outside possibility is that the fuel pump contacts within the flapper need cleaning ( Read up on Lucas 4CU injection for further info).

What Langy is showing you is how to plug in a "Bourbon"type pressure gauge for the purposes of seeing the pressures.
Remember to pull the relay under your drivers seat and run down any residual pressure in the Fuel manifold first.
There are 3 pressures you need to observe
1 Ignition on ,not cranking,flapper closed , should be 0 Zero pressure
2 Cranking engine ,should see at least 35 PSI(hold the flapper gate open 1/8 inch if you dont get anything whilst crankin)
3 Engine started and running at idle (Vac greater than 10insHg) = 28PSI
4 Punch throttle and should see rapid increase to 36-38 and the quick drop off as throttle released

5 Find the little vac line going from Regulator to Plenum ,while running pull it off and replace it quickly ,watch the gauge , no reaction stuffed regulator !( or stuffed vac line or blocked lines)

OK so i got her back from land rover today and apparently there is an issue with the fuel pressure due to the fuel pump not getting power all the time??? we bypassed the fuel pump relay and ran power direct to the fuel pump and she ran alot better but still very rich. anyone had this issue? im thinking an ECU Problem?

if it does turn out to be faulty ECU i have a reco'd one here that was working fine, removed from early 1989 3.5L flapper system you can have for $50. S.E Suburbs pickup.

After all the advice to measure your real time Fuel Pressures ,did you in fact measure them ? Sounds like your just going to change parts until something works .Go for your life !

im not confident in measuring fuel pressures. thats why i took it to land rover to organize. they said there wasnt enough fuel getting through as power to the fuel pump wasnt working as it should.

anyway i tried my mates ecu and fuel relays from an 89 3.5 (different part number than was in mine)

didnt really fix anything felt like a little more power on lpg?

BUT.......


when i put my ECU into his with BOTH his an my own fuel relays it wouldnt run on petrol!!!
so obviously i will need another ECU and still to work out why the fuel pump isnt getting power all the time.


anyone know a good auto electrician??? in the western suburbs that has experience on these things?
