Backlash.

If it hasn't got ABS, then the hubs are integral with the axles so no possibility of slop there.
If you haven't rebuilt the Borg Warner transfer then the rear output shaft of the transfer case would have to be a candidate as would the chain which may have worn and stretched.

This is most likely the culprit because it doesn't happen until it really warms up (the chain stretches more when hot?).

Am I right in assuming one should attend to it immediately? i.e. if it breaks it could get ugly? If it really stretches, it chews out the case from the inside??

I need to get my Series 2A rolling chassis to the exhaust shop.

Is it a DIY jobbie? I'm capable of welding up a cradle, bolting it onto the case then lowering it with a garage jack.

You will get more clues as the chain stretches. It will start to skip sprockets on hard acceleration. I doubt if it would break as they are humungous.
I would be more worried about the output shaft, as if it wears the splines out ,you will be stuck with no drive at all.
I intend to change mine as a precaution as soon as I get the bearing.

And the handbrake being on when you check the driveshaft sliding joint doesn't give you enough movement to check it properly.

Just for the other BW owners, I was thinking about why the spline goes on the output shaft and I have come up with 2 theories.
1 The constant change of speed of the rear driveshaft caused by the UJs , especially when lifted may cause a constant rocking of the spline on the output shaft in the female diff spline. Note that on all the shafts I have seen the front spline into the VC is perfect.

2 By the powdered metal left in the diff spline, there is virtually no oil circulation in this area. One fix may be to gun drill a hole down the centre of the output shaft and a hole between the diff and viscous ( to let oil IN when stopped )and another inside the diff spline ( to let the collected oil OUT when moving.) This would be like an LT95 intermediate shaft.

I don't know what this would do to the strength of the output shaft. It looks like the shaft must be above the oil level in the case . Maybe just an overfill of oil could work. To me this is probably a design fault not picked up by BW as all the other cases have a central output.

This is except the P38 where they do chains. Maybe because the output is in oil in the flipped transfer?

What about drilling some holes in the diff centre spline?

All ideas and comments welcome, as I have the luxury of doing something to the shaft before I fit it.
