Back in the 1980s and early 1990s, I had 3 different P76 4.4 taken out to 5 litres, all unreliable and thirsty on petrol. All up I would have spent $60,000 on the three engines.
The best thing I did was to remove the last (and most reliable) of them and fit a 4.6 with Motec ecu over the standard Rover injection manifold.

I will stick to the plan and put the engine back together and see what state it is in first.
My mate was into jet boats many years ago and the 4.4 was his engine of choice. Unfortunately he doesnt remember the history of the one I dragged out from under his house. So it could be interesting.
Which reminds me .. I should ask about that supercharger I saw in there.....

Small print hint: P76 engines will break cranks if regularly taken above 4000 to 4500 rpm. Not worth the risk, get a 4.6 if you're serious.
I spent a small fortune building a 4.4 for my 88 rangie a few (about 7) years ago. I wrote a long screed about it on the old RR&Disco forum at the time, someone had cut & pasted it into a post on here a few years ago so it may come up on a search. Upshot was that if serious about doing a rebuild, a 4.6 would be a better option. I fitted the 3.5 flapper injection manifold & system (which, by the way, fitted under the bonnet), had all sorts of trouble with that as it doesn't feed enough fuel for a 4.4 under load. ended up with an aftermarket ecu and all was good. I put the motor on the market a couple of years ago then discovered it had a burnt-out valve, so it's now in bits in my shed, only done 115,000km and I'm still undecided about getting the valves done and putting it in my current, tired, rangie. When all was sorted it was a great motor. Mounting the ancillaries was a very minor challenge, by far the biggest hassle was getting the EFI right.
Afterthought- having just acquired a lathe, and having the items to copy, I might look into making a few of the transmission and starter motor adapters at some point.
In the 1970s and early 1980s you could get new in crate P76 and Terrier Truck 4.4 for $500. They were a great drop in for lots of things but they got old quick and now good blocks are hard to find and there are better new alloy V8s out there complete with current EFI systems.Quote:
