    Which coil spring compressor...

....would you guys use on your Rangie? I need to compress or remove my front springs to check drive shaft clearance for my 351 conversion.
    Cheers.

I have a Kmart one from about 15years ago.
    IMHO things to consider.
The "claws" should be well spread so that they cannot rock and should have a large curve so that the spring cannot escape even if one compressor slips around..
The claws must be thin to fit easily between coils
The nuts and thread must be high quality so that they turn easily .( this is not the case with my cheapies, but you can add washers.)

I always lubricate mine with lots of oil to ensure easy turning.

I have never had one slip, so operation procedure is important. The claws must be as near as 180 degrees from each other to reduce the possibility of slippage. This is not possible on a Range Rover so you have to really Try to get them as near as possible.
Try to grab as much spring as possible, and this can mean spreading end coils with a lever to fit the compressor.
Make sure you tighten evenly or loosen evenly.
Think about he position of the claws when decompressed, as it is a pain to have to do them up again, undo them, reposition and then do them up again.
    Regards Philip A

    Thanks guy's,
Does the no-compressor method work with non-std springs?
Mine appears to have King springs.
Btw mine is a '93 so converted from Air suspension if that makes a difference?

yep, a good hyd jack and common sense and you can change the coils out easily.

weight it up, tie the spring down, jack up the chassis from the axle change the spring.

    Done.

When you say "tie the spring down", do mean something like using short lengths of chain around the coils to keep it compressed?

DAVO,forget all that crap, you just dont need it ,just jack and chock appropriately. Can be done (safely)with only one wheel off and off the ground at a time . takes longer to do the front shocks than to do the any of coils !

So what your saying guy's, is the spring will basically fall out if you undo the shock and let the axle travel as far down as it can? What a bargain!

it will come down to whats in there and what your relacing it with, if you taking out some 150psi/16inch frl coils and replacing them 200lb /18 inchers , then have a meter long cheater bar ready as well (a mate to kick the spring is allways helpful !!!)
