I think the water pump is one place I haven't been yet. Thermostat is new - changed it on Saturday to an 82 degree unit as I thought the 92'degree one in there was a bit much, but found out afterwards the gauge was up the **** as well.
Might run some restore (or the car equivalent of it) through the system, flush everything out, drop the water pump, fan and radiator and see what I can see.
Thanks for all the help and support guys, I really appreciate it. :)
For cleaning the cooling system on the brown Merc, the Merc gurus recommend crystalline citric acid. The Merc is a all alloy six.
That sounds like a plan, I'll grab some and give it a whirl. :)
Well, back to this for one more crack before I put a match to it... 😉
Put some fresh fuel in it, connected the battery and it fired straight up after sitting for 18 months, so that’s a good start. Drove around the block to get everything free - all good apart from no tacho and no charge - not sure what’s happened to the alternator but that’s just one more thing to add to the list. 😁
Gave it a quick hose down to get rid of a few spiders and I’ll make a start at getting the radiator out and everything accociated with the cooling system out as well - water pump, thermostat, fan, hoses - everything. Bit of a PITA job as I need to remove a very heavy bash plate first to get the rad out, but it must be done. If I can get it sorted this time I’ll make the effort to finish it off and start driving it again.
Well didn’t the planets align tonight...
Putting a list together of everything I need - Altenator, stepper motor (mines been stuffed for a while), water pump, etc, etc and a chance text ended up with me at another forum members place looking at a Disco he’d bought for panels. I ended up buying the whole engine, rad, etc, etc off him so I have a spare motor as well all for around what I’d have paid for the bits and pieces I needed. I do need to liberate it from the engine bay however, so have a days work to do in the next couple of weeks, but it will put the Rangie back on top of the list now. 👍
That is certainly one thought i've had - the only thing that stops me doing that is it has a few oil leaks - all the common ones, valley gasket, rocker covers and rear main. All no big deal as the engine will be sitting on the garage floor but extra time and money. If I change the radiator, fan and water pump and still have issues, then I'll fix the leaks and bang it in. At least I'll have a couple of options now. [emoji106]
