    My 86 Rangie Hiline

So, even though I have been on here for a while now, I never got around to starting a thread on the old Rangie. Given that she is about to get some more significant mods done to it, I thought now would be a good time to post this thread, so I can look back at how far I've come with it.

I am the third owner - my FIL bought this car 18 years ago off the original owner - an original Toorak tractor this was, with all the goodies, and a custom Wood & Picket interior. It spend the next 12 years towing his boat and caravan about, before he retired it to the farm after he retired. I rescued it from going to the wreckers, and drove it as was for a while.

This is it as it was when I got it - which is the same as when the FIL bought it all those years ago.

Since then, I have ditched the crappy front bar and replaced it with an ARB item, fitted an ARB rear bar, and modified a rear wheel carrier for it. Got a set of BFG KM2 muddies for it, and fitted a light bar to the roof, and made up a et of sliders/steps, so now it looks like this...

I have done a heap on the wiring - I have "de-Lucased" most of the wiring and ancillaries, so now it has a Bosch alternator, OEX starter, and pretty much all new wiring and relays under the bonnet. Second battery has also been fitted as well as a UHF with both high and low gain antennas (depending on where I go)

So, on the "To Do" list now is:-

Fit 3.9L EFI engine from Disco 1
    Paint it - Matt Black
    Fit small body lift
Fit winch (which is sitting in the front room)
    Fit decent recovery points
    Replace springs and shocks.
Fit out interior to suit my camping needs.

Maybe further down the track I'll look at upgrading the axles, fit diff locks, etc, but that's only if I start taking it into harder spots and breaking things...

So, I'll post more pics as things change and see where we end up.

    Cheers - Gav

my 86 hiline looked that clean and straight once apon a time!

Glad you rescued it from the wreckers and will keep an eye on this thread for updates.

just one question, Are you dead set on matte black though? i'm normally a fan of it, but after seeing it on a rangie it didn;t look as cool as i expected! and seeing yours now it looks nicer!

Unfortuately I am set on the matt black. I have only seen photos of them, and I think they look great. My mate has a paint shop, and he has just done a tojo matt black, and it looks awesome. It just has to be painted though, I hate the colour it is now, it is the one thing I have never liked about this vehicle.

Keep an eye on the thread, I have some ideas on how to set it off well with the use of some gloss black highlights, silver pin stripes and polished edges on the rims.

    Stay tuned...

Thanks - Not really, it is in quite good condition, although the colour is terrible... The walnut veneer on the dash and gauge panel is cracked, and I may replace this at some stage. Other than that, the centre console needs a bit of TLC, but it is a fairly comfortable place to be. I'll post a couple of snaps of it tomorrow.

    Cheers - Gav

Some photos of the interior - all in pretty good nick considering its age.

Nice... Thanks for the pics, the interior looks pretty solid.. Fixing the veneer will be a good little project too. Good luck!

    Hi Gav,

Looks great - you would probably get more work done on it if you didn't spend so much time helping other forum members!

    Regards,
    The Grey Ghost!
