hi trav,
the 82 lt95 has the .996:1 high range, so running 33's or 35's will hurt. you can change it to 1.336:1 from a county it will be perfect then:)

That's interesting about your oil choice. I wouldn't go that thin up here, though, too chicken.
I've stripped about three of these in the last few years and I think the only worn parts were the transfer idler shaft, the bearing surface at the very end of one mainshaft, I think some reverse parts, and of course some parts of the centre diff. I seem to remember all of these boxes had black oil in them, which had once been gear oil. Otherwise most bearing surfaces and gear teeth were very nice.
Pretty much the only damaged parts were the little teeth on mainshaft first gear, and that would have to be from people shoving it into gear in a hurry, which is why if I just double-clutch mine and change the oil a lot it should last for a very long time.
My diff lock light comes on when you push the knob to the left? Left is on t the right is off? It does have high and low written on the knob as being up and down though but I can't seem to move it up Nd down? Why is mine different? It's an 86efi auto....
It's probably jammed up from lack of use. Get it rolling on a smooth level road at about 5kph, knock the auto in 'N' then give the transfer case lever a good hit forward with your palm.
Thanks Justin, forgot that bit  But they do have the short shift which I prefer. Always foiund the long stick LT77 a chore to drive, seem to have a habit of starting off in 3rd and I hate where revers is
The 85 is mostly a runabout so only be running the std tyres so not too concerned about the ratios, I have a 77 2 door which will be doing the off-road duties which IICR has a lower high range as well.

I think the gear ratios are just fine with the LT95 unless you want to run really big tyres, 35's should be ok but I'm not too sure. My Rangie is running about 31's and has no problems taking off, although that V8 has plenty enough grunt to get things moving.
