Thread: Classic Rangie: Is it the ideal poor man's car?

I've got old Landie magazines from when they were doing these conversions to new Classics - er, that is, before they were called that - and I don't remember the price but it was, of course, phenomenol. They did everything that needed doing, so it was the exhaust, brakes, suspension and wheels and tyres as well. You couldn't just buy the engine conversion, as once the power was there then the rest of the car needed improving. I seem to recall that with the stiffened suspension off road they weren't so flash anymore. But because the whole package was so well done, they had an excellent reputation.

Still doing to new Rangies

They did replace everything brakes and suspension and they drove like a dream and cornered like no other classic.

But the best bit is they put a small Overfinch sticker on the rear tailgate that was colour coded to the car So you could not really see it unless you knew what you were looking for. Most of them looked like a standard classic.

Was always a car on my wish list.

I was at the impression that modifying a P38 was mission impossible
I love the shape of them, but would like to remove the engine and electronics and fit a Tdi300 on it

I wouldn't How gutless would that make it! Even the 4.6 is underpowered for the weight of a P38 IMO.

Thanks for the input, but it will be possible to eliminate all the electric problems in the P38 by installing a diesel engine (at a reasonable cost) regardless of which brand or it will be not as easy as do it in a Classic?

A BMW 6 cylinder would be IMO the best fit for a P38. Are there any close relatives of the 2.5 idi from the DSE that would have direct injection and a little more capacity?

... If you're already poor, the Classic Rangie would be too expensive to run... costly to convert to LPG (for a Poor Man) and putting another engine in it would take lots of dollars.

But if you're a Rich Man, then owning a Classic for long enough, - and especially if you put differant engines in it... will soon make you a Poor Man.

You buy a RRC that someone has converted to gas, has had everything important replaced and that he gives up on it because he's just bought a newer luxotank. He sells the RRC for what the market value is, IE not very much. You get a teriffic value car which is quite cheap to own so long as you treat it kindly.

Modifications are for mugs or rich people, you buy the car with the mods on at a fraction of their cost!
