I agree with you, the ide is find a RR converted to gas and that was used as family car only.
My questions about conversion were only to learn something about the P38 and the possibilities of fitting a diesel engine on it.
I like simplicity and for that reason I would like again to have an early Classic RR.

What would the range and running costs of an LPG 3.5 v8 RRC be?

On diesel with a manual they do about 10km/l on the open road, worst is about 8.5km/l. Range of 800km on the standard tank.

Consumption on LPG is approx. double that of your diesel and the fuel price is around half of diesel/petrol in Adelaide, may be better/worse elsewhere in Oz. So city running cost is similar, not so good in the country. Range is approx 300-400km from your typical 70 litre underfloor set.

The '88/89 RRC auto used to get around 3 to 4 km/litre towing a one-tonne sweeper.

Never had the sweeper off for long enough to get a reliable reading for 'without'.

That was a 3.5 which had a tickled cam (for towing) from the PO.

Would think that an LPG Classic would work out cheaper 'cos they have a smaller oil sump than a diesel.. and longer change-intervals.

10-16,000km?

I remember changing the oil on an LPG forklift which had a *broken* hour-meter. It had done a years work with no change because it hadn't done any hours. The oil was a lot thicker than normal, but still clear.
The economics of LPG don't work here because LPG is dearer than both diesel and petrol for energy content.

I have been pondering with buy an old 200 or 300tdi disco bit tatty one and taking out the engine and gear box and putting it in the classic.

I have done it before I had a 1972 RRC with a 200 tdi in it. And fancy doing it again to my Rangie I have now

I like the v8 but pain with tuning and not a fan of autos. Where as the tdis are pretty much bullet proof.

That conversion, I guess will cost $5000 + so the end result will be a $10000 for a clean RR Classic.
IMO it is not a proposition for me now driving only 10000 km a year, $5000 pay a lot of gas/fuel
