Well I took it for a quick test drive today. It went well, I was impressed by the low down torque. The gearbox shifted well. I am fairly sure it is a r380 (reverse is underneath 5th). The ticking noise I heard the first time I saw it had gone (i'm assuming it was a sticky lifter). The engine sounded sweet and didn't make any nasty noises. Here are some pics as promised. More to come. As you can see, the paint is in good condition (apart from the roof). There is a couple of small bubbles near the windscreen and one of the rear quarter panels. The sides are very straight, no dings at all. I'm not a fan of the alloy bullbar, does anyone have a bumber and front spoiler that they'd sell me?

More pics. The upper tailgate need a bit of work. There is a small amount of rust, the gas lift cylinder needs to be changed (or recharged) and it doesn't seem to latch properly. It might need some new latch parts, or to be readjusted.
The leak from the transfer case. I only had a quick look, it's hard to tell where exactly it's coming from. I think it will either be a quick and easy minor seal, or a big pain in the arse job...
The interior. It's generally in very good condition and is only missing a couple of trim pieces. The wood needs some attention. The central locking doesn't work properly (perhaps sticky solenoids). The windows work (but are a little slow). The stereo works intermittently (I would replace it anyway- a tape deck with cd stacker is a bit behind the times).
The scuba gas tanks. No provision for a tow bar that I can see. Also, the departure angle is not very good. I won't be offroading in this Rangie anyway (perhaps some dirt roads and a bit of snow). Unfortunately the tanks were installed in 01, so will need to be tested for RWC.
A couple of pics of the engine bay. There is a little bit of surface rust in parts. Seems to be very minor and not structural. The undercarriage doesn't have any rust. The engine looks clean and largely free of oil leaks. The original owner was running a pod filter attached to the mouth of the air flow meter, which disintegrated (when it was being stored for an extended period). It hasn't been driven much as is. I will put a piece of stocking or something over it as a temporary fix when I drive it home. I will find a 90 degree elbow of the right diameter and attach it to the air flow meter. I'll then try and use a factory airbox- does anyone have one lying around that they'd sell me? Failing the factory airbox, I could try and make a Falcon or Commodore airbox fit...
