    LT 77 swap

Can anyone tell me if they know of any major issue swapping out an LT 77 from and 84 (long stick) to an 88 (short stick). My 88 is getting abit noisy and I have my old 84 with a good box in it.

    TIA

Well, it appears it is not as easy as one would think .

After my 88 RRC started to make abit more noise than it should, I bit the bullet and had the box/trans taken out of both the 88 and the 84. With the 2 sitting side by side on the (big) work bench, it was obvious it was not going to be a straight swap. The diff trans guys did a bit of home work and I am now led to believe there is an LT77 (82-84) and an LT77S (85-88). I was not concerned about post 88 variations as they did not have the manual diff lock.

Evidently there is also enough internal differences between the LT77 & LT77S not to make it worth while trying to use one to fix the other.

The upshot of all this is that I am now have an 84 & an 88 RRC in my front yard with their box/trans sitting in the back of each and what I like to call "some transport issues".

    Ashcroft Transmissions - LT77

The information down near the bottom may help. Ashcrofts do recommend changing to an R380 if your LT77 dies. At any rate, you've just got a very typical problem of an older car and the usual choices are to sell them, fix it cheaply, or, (my inevitable option), throw money at it until it gets better.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

So I take it the housings bolted on the top of the transmission cases will not interchange.

I always wondered about this as I would like to convert my 1984 long stick to a later box and keep the gear levers in the same location to avoid butchering the centre console.

The LT77s is a better box than the earlier model LT77, but if you were going to change I'd be going for an R380 out of a D1 V8 but you'd also need to swap the prop shafts because the R380 is 30mm longer.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

My 1984 ph 11 LT 77 has done 350 k never been touched and been noisy in 5th since I bought in in 1992 at 125 k. I have towed heavy boats and trailers, used it offroad extensively and it is still much the same.

If a later LT 77 would fit in without too much expense I can't see what's wrong with them.

Pop058 mine is a long stick.

As my interior in nice and tidy I was hoping I could get the later short stick box out of a Disco, swap the selector mechansim on the top of the box and all would be good. Much cheaper to buy a whole box than rebuild mine.

If you can find a reasonably low km R380 that'd be the way to go; I once put one in one of my previous RRC; amittedly it went thru warm P76 V8 transition first; then Mitsubishi 3.3L turbo diesel ( wouldn't recommend that as motor too heavy; changes the character of the car, but great for towing).
Not only does it have a better bearing arrangement than LT77, has a bonus of synchro on reverse- handy for rocking in mud or sand.
A few years ago, parts for R380 were considerably cheaper than LT77; in some cases, 1/4 price of similar part.
Me now? I'm a believer in all things automatic; find better offroad and a MUST for any small diesel transplant, eg 300 or TD5 as the torque converter mostly negates any low down turbo lag.
