Water/ coolant system advice
Hi all , just picked up an 86 range rover with a 3.5 V8 that runs well , albeit with some bodge efforts under the bonnet im in the process of getting sorted .
When i got it , the resovoir cap had been bodged with a bit of rubber to help get a seal on it , which wasnt doing much of a job , so went out and bought another couple with different pressure ratings , and not sure what i actually need for it .
i put one on ( havent done any real driving in the car yet ) that has a rating stated on it for 15psi , is this suitable for it ? or is there another one i need to be looking at ?
The cap i put on did pressure the system because as soon as it did , i found a couple of hose leaks that i have since fixed .
Just not sure if this cap is the right one to do the job .
Also wondering what is the process to prime the system with water and get the air out .
Thanks for your help , im jumping in from an older more simple hilux , and all the electronic gear on this has me learning from scratch .
The motor has been converted from carbies to gas running an EFI , which is also needing some advice on , but that is another story for another thread !!!
cheers , James

15 psi will be fine. There isn't a problem with air locks in a V8. Just remember that the expansion tank is an extension of the radiator - it goes up and down according to temperature and it's under pressure. If you want you can still fit an overflow container after the tank, but if you fill it according to specs, it should be right.

Good stuff , thanks mate , when the system was under pressure with the new cap it showed a small pin jet leak out of the bottle on the top seam just near the filler cap , which will have to solder up today , then get into why the gas converter is freezing up , which i read about on here last night could be because of the heater unit turned off and im pretty sure the heater isnt by passed .
Hopefully with the bottle soldered and get the converter freezing sorted i might be able t get it on the road and give her a bit of a run , once i get all the little niggling problems sorted in the engine bay and learn a bit more about it .
cheers ; James
