    Stuck in the mud

So I went out for a drive on Thursday afternoon with a mate and failed to notice a hidden mud hole....plop in we went! And stuck solid all the way up to the sills! wheels wouldn't even turn so am guessing not enough power from my tired 3.5 or the torque convertor is on its way out yes?

Ended up sleeping the night in the car and walking till we found a farmer with a winch equipped bulldozer to pull us out the next morning.

So next thing on my shopping list to buy is a winch....but what sort do I need?
Never bought a winch before so don't really know what I'm meant to be looking at. Some help please guys.

Where abouts were you at when you got bogged? We'll be up there at Xmas, don't forget to wave
As for a winch, there were a few deals recently at various places, I'm not sure what their like, but the Tigres ones seem cheap enough.
I recently bought myself a 9.5 TJM with rope, but haven't used it yet, so I can't tell you what it's like. Had I been more financial, I'd have got the equivilant size Warn winch.

Looks like you learned a valuable lesson. If your going out on your own, make sure you have some recovery gear - doesn't need to be a winch, even a shovel and/or a high lift jack would have been able to get you out of that.

Better still, go out with someone else, so you can either all get stuck and have some fun, or ideally recover each other...

If you buy a cheap winch, it is best to repack it with some decent grease before use, and looking after it so it works when you need it too.

All the best for your next trip - hope it ends better than this one.

try and find a good 2nd hand warn xd9000 for the same price as a new chinese copy, they do come up[i got mine for $500] and then you have a quality/more reliable/repairable product- however i still test my winch befor leaving home to go bush bashing[did this morning befor going to glasshouse] just to be sure. I bought my winch after spending 1/2 a day in a freezing cold mud hole breaking our[5 cars] recovery gear,

I would no be worrying about a winch.

If your "wheels would not even turn" you have far more important things to worry about.

I take it you know about low range and Center Diff Lock ???

Centre diff lock didn't make any difference?
Is an auto with no switch for low range?
Went out again today and avoided that place but has been fine on everything else?

Was on a place called carrols track

I would have thought you had a viscous coupling rather than a diff lock - but you certainly have low range - I would have thought lever operated.

I take it from your comments then that you were not in low range - may not have helped but then it may have.

if the wheels werent turning at all then you may have been low on oil in the auto, may have a damaged auto, or youve accidentally knocked the tcase into neutral.

Looks like an 88 so would have thought it would have a manual diff lock.
