Welcome to the sickness.
Got "my" 1978 RRC back the other day. Originally purchased in 1986, spent a heap painting/upgrading in 1988, drove it for next 9 years with all kids growing up in it. Sold in 97 as I knew that the cancer was spreading. Turns up parked 400m down the road from me. Still drives. No reg, riddled with cancer though engine/drive train etc still good. Picked up for 500 bucks. Now family want me to re build it as a keeper, in fairly original trim. I reckon to do a really proper job, no short cuts, we are looking at 30K. Body/paint alone to do well will be significant. Madness? The car will remain with the family until it dies for second time around, I would want another 20 years out of it.
Welcome to the sickness.

Probably is madness, but for sentimental reasons, maybe not. Mine will never leave the family, and will always get what it needs no matter what the cost.
Sounds like you have your work cut out for you though, but nothing is impossible with the right motivation, and a deep wallet.
If you do go the whole hog, keep us all posted with plenty of pics.

Some photos. Originally purchased 1986, steel wheels, the light green color. Re built 1988, painted Porsche color Surinam red, "Swampy" Marsh did the seats, Momo wheel, heads done by Ron Richards EDC, flowed, teflon valve stem seals, 3 angle valve job, good springs, modified Perry extractors, pistons from Mike Norman's fathers speedway car (norman superchargers and also RRC auto trans fitter back in late 70's/early 80's) Piranaha ignition, cloyes true roller timing gear, crane cam, modified 350cfm holley, dual batteries, koni's, different coils, modified LT95 trans, Brown Davis fuel tank, etc. All still there but some now ruined/very tired. The momo wheel is a throw away but boss is good. All Aeroquip is like new, as is chrome work in engine bay. Still runs well but doors tailgate/sills all completely rotten. Plus lots more I am sure. I have two replacement doors and tailgate already plus various other bits. Aim will be to rebuild it with original engine etc, tastefully upgraded but keeping basic car intact. A 500cfm edelbrock, Yellaterra roller rockers, pacemaker exatractors, perhaps a bit more cam, plus hone/rings/bearings/valve grind. Plus cut all rust out and replace panels - I was thinking Paddocks, unless anyone has idea of who supplies better sills/ internal panels. The seats will need re doing, plus trim etc. I reckon white this time round. Was going to lift the body off and give body to panel shop, do the chassis separate. Galvanized? Two years is realistic timeline given that I am not here much.
Logically it is madness. Unfortunately I am not very logical at times!
knowing that one is not alone with this type of affliction helps![]()
my old mans got his old mans orginal holden in the garage.
I suspect I know what project I'll be helping dad to finish off in his twilight years and the project that alex will probably be helping me refinish when my lights getting dim.

If you've benefited from one or more of my posts please remember, your taxes paid for my skill sets, I'm just trying to make sure you get your monies worth.
If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
More than once, I've spent two years rebuilding Landies. Mind you, a lot of that was from learning along the way, as well as redoing whatever mess a professional had made.
Farming out work to specialists sure saves time if you can find someone competent. Be really careful with galvanising. I've had them wreck things and not dip things the right way and all sorts of stuff. In fact I won't deal with a galvaniser anymore unless it can't be avoided.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
There's a few cars in my history that I'd love to find down the road for five hundred bucks. Particularly the genuine XT GT Falcon that I had as a P-plater and sold for, if I remember right, about eight hundred. If I'd only known...
2 years, Took me 4 to restore my original series, no less extensively. Body off bare chassis, all panels split. And that was 4/5 nights a week plus weekends.
Good luck.
