    Ignition light on

Driving home last night and the ignition light came on and the headlights went dim. Checked wires, one of the earths was wonky so fixed that but no difference. The car had been hesitating at low speed for a few days.

Now at idle the warning light is bright, dashboard ammeter shows a slightly negative draw. If I rev it the light dims and ammeter switches to slightly positive.

Recently had a new Ignition Amplifier Module, coil, steering box and brake servo.

I'm hoping it's something simpler (cheaper) than the alternator...any ideas?

    Thanks for any help!

Have a look at your alternator to see what sort it is - if it's not a LR one, it may only be that the regulator has expired. A plug in replacement module should be available. There have been a number of threads on what to use as a replacement - search bosch alternator in range rover and you should find something (both here and web)

Sounds like an alternator - check your battery voltage with the engine runnning and see what you have. As mentioned, if the original Lucas unit has been replaced at some stage, then it may be an easy and cheap fix. If it is still running a Lucas alternator, you have done well to get it to last so long, but it is time to upgrade it to something decent - there are Bosch units that bolt on with a minimum of fuss.

Does sound alternator related, however it's worth checking the cables for resistance - if it's got an ammeter, it's certainly getting on in age.

I think there's an electrical sticky on the classic forum if you don't know how.

So, new development. Yesterday the ammeter stopped switching between +ve and -ve and went on to +ve 25A for a while and then hovered around zero after a couple hours.

Back to normal? Maybe the mechanic spilt something on it and it got covered with dust and now its clean? Or d'you think it's intermittant?

Dirty or worn out brushes in the alternator. New ones probably needed.

    ^^^^^

Philip A is on it, have been there twice myself. Identical symptoms to yours both times, same alt.

New brushes for a Bosch alt have cost me $10 and $20 soldered in from auto elecs. Can't comment on other brands.

    Thanks for the replies.

Changed brush module and new plugs today. The light is off but on start up in the morning it backfires a little bit and revs die down when i let the clutch go. I figured this would stop with new brushes etc. It's fine once you get going.

    Any more ideas?

The other problems are not related to the alternator, but most probably to the other work you did. Check that the leads are on the correct way at the coil and module.

Thanks. The same thing was happening before the alternator work so I assumed it would go away. It had a new IAM fitted a couple months ago, maybe it's faulty?

My fuel pump also makes strange sounds, maybe low fuel pressure after the car's been standing all night? Leaky vacuum hose somewhere?

    Argh
