Borg Warner centre diff.

GOOD DOOGZ, Gazza, nearly there, ordered a new Rear Mainshaft Gear from FWD, Melbourne @ $275. Found the old original front Tail Shaft (its 60mm shorter) A bit of fiddling with the RH gear box Mount is required and a slight modification to the centre dif-lock operating lever will be necessary (the HI-LO linkage all fits and operates). Gerry P has 'loaned' me a mainshaft gear until I get the newy.
And a note re sailors rum ration that we used to quote in Papua "anyone who cant fight on Negrita, is a coward"

Little off topic for this thread but i own a '91 CSK Australian model range rover. The cross pin in the centre diff of the BW transfer case has been welded to the spide gears in the diff. The thrust washers behind the gears are almost gone and the output gears have ground themselves into the housing [bighmmm] Because the idiot who replaced the chain and viscous coupling last used the wrong silicon and way to much of it and clogged the oiling holes in the diff centre.

I am askin if anybody has been able to get ahold of a Borg Warner centre diff and fitted it.

Plenty of RRC BWTC's around. Just need to make sure they have a working VC and splines left in tact on the rear output shaft.

Most will need an overhaul of some kind, if you want it to be reliable. output shaft is cheap. VC is not available unless someone has a NOS part laying around (would be a case of ring around / troll the 'net for one)
the BW on a p38 is different and has different failure modes also. namely sprocket jumping on the morse chain. AFAIK, the parts are not interchangeable between the two.

regardless, you shouldn't have much trouble finding a complete transfer case.

Huh the transfer case is filled with normal auto trans fluid. Are you saying someone filled it with silicon?
Silicon fluid is inside the viscous only, and that is normally sealed from factory, however I do remember some people in the past drilling holes and refilling the viscous only.
Can you clarify that statement?
if it's had only silicon fluid in the case no wonder the rest stuffed up!!!

Sorry late reply. Been busy (Who isn't busy when you own a land rover haha).
The silicon i was talking about was the silicon that is used to seal the the halves of the transfer case. The original owner had used copious amount of silicone to seal the case and was what looked to be the incorrect silicone as it dissolved in ATF fluid. It looked like the dissolved silicone had made its way into the oiling holes in the centre diff. This clogged up the holes and basically buggered the diff.

Managed to get a new transfer case in the meantime and all internals look good. In the time from my last post i also replaced the transmission as something whent crackle snap bang inside it. Got hold of a manual v8 disco for free as well so i should now have plenty of spare parts. :



Current set up:
'91 CSK V8 Auto
2" OME lift
Putting another 2" of lift in the next 2 months and building a high comp 3.9

... And when you do get a working BWTC in place, - whatever you do.... keep the front and rear tyres the same make/model/size/WEAR. A difference of 50% is what shortnd the life of Sarah's BW.... PO used to replace tyres in PAIRS. - Fine in a RWD or FWD, but not in a viscous-coupled AWD Rangie, Classic or P38. No, can't 'prove' it was the main cause, but its the only logic remaining.
Yes correct, the BWTC kills the output (fuse) shaft in a Classic, chews the chain in a P38. Wichcraft or Magic... take your pick.[bighmmm]

We have a 92 Sherwood with the VC, so reading this with interest. Not doing many k,s with it now though.

In Bougainville , Negrita was referred to as "Buka Meri"[bigsmile1]
