1990 Range Rover VM 2.4 engine swap?

    Hi All.

I have been offered a 1990 Rangie VM diesel For $2,000 I believe the Tdi300 is a bolt in with a factory conversion kit.

This one has overheating and possible blown head gasket. I am thinking about buying it and fixing the one head gasket that is blown and drive it until the engine totally dies or another head gasket goes. In the mean time find a Tdi wreck to do a swap.

has anyone done this or know what is required to do this?

    cheers

    Matt

rrturboD has put in a 300tdi into his Rangie. I do not believe it is a simple bolt in swap - I believe that to get the engine under the bonnet as a minimum a body lift is needed.

I am sure either rrturboD or someone else will be along to outline the details.

A 1990 might have the arched scuttle that the Tdi just fits under. You can get away without a body lift if that's the case but it's still a bit tight.

I read hear in a 2006 post that it should be a bolt in as it is already a diesel I would think it wouldn't be to hard.

It is a manual and has a new Clutch.

would it be easier to drop the engine and box out the bottom or just take the engine out the top?

    Cheers

I know of two local RR's (approx 1993) with a 300tdi's fitted, both stock body height. If you fit the engine complete with trans you shouldn't have too much trouble. Not sure if the engine mounts on the chassis are the same, you may have to adapt the d1 ones.

I was hoping to use the Existing Manual Box and new Clutch. it should have an oil pump and Cooler on the manual Box. Do the Disco ! manual boxes have this?

    cheers

If you plan to not get the vm running an wanna tackle engine swap straight away, there is a RR classic in Guyra NSW with a VM, has the heads off due to overheat, has rear Detroit air locker, front bar with factory metal light guards. Its red but pretty faded which is the major drawback. He's only asking around the 1k mark
