    Power Steering Pump - cactus!

    The choice as to which part of my 92 Sherwood I maintain next has been taken away from me with the demise of my power steering pump.

    A trip to the Northern Beaches on Sunday started well, but when parking up I heard a reasonably loud ticking/clicking coming from the front of the engine at idle which I intially though was the fan catching on something. Nothing obvious to see so I decided to drive the 24kms home and take a better look with a toolkit at hand. A couple of kms later and the ticking became a loud rattling and the power steering was no more. The pulley had separated from the pump and was rotating loosely. An NRMA flatbed home cost me $20 so my membership has paid for itself again.

    The steering box is new and I guess the demise of the last one contributed to this failure with low fluid levels etc. The failure may also explain a squeeling noise I was getting from the motor at approx 2500rpm?

    Anyhow, a couple of questions;

    Does anyone have a spare lying around, or know where I can get a replacement reasonably cheaply (I have posted an ad in the Wanted section), and secondly, has anyone experienced this kind of failure before? I have 290K kms on the clock.

    Cheers.

    I assume the press fit flange came off the pump shaft, not just the pulley securing bolts fell out due to looseness. I have a spare pump here in SA without the pulley but was working OK, the 3.9 motor was removed for dieselisation. PM me if you are interested, pump is small on its own and should post easily.

    If your pump is that new, I would try to get it replaced by Warrenty.

    Many thanks Dave. I will pull it down on Saturday and assess the damage and parts and take some pics then.

    I had a quick look last night but too dark for photo's.
    The outer of the dual pulley's (feeding the alternator) is still in place and intact but the inner one has detatched and is in freeplay. The three securing bolts are all there and still tight.
    So the pump has seized and the belt has forced the two parts of the pulley mechanism to come away from each other? There appears to be broken/jagged metal visible on the inner item so it looks like a fairly severe failure. I will pull it apart on Saturday for a better look.
