Well the story is sad............. about a month ago SWMBO took the RRC to GinGin to pick up some of her daughters furniture, called me from GG and said that the car was sounding like it was gurgling near the firewall. the temp guage was normal but it took some water and a new O ring for the radiator plug and they went on their way home.

They got within the suburban area and smoke filled the cab, water dissapeared and we had to get it flat bedded home.
I spent the next weekend looking for raesons but all I could find was a leaking hose (small leak) and no where could I find the reason for the oil all over the engine.

All went well for the next week but then the gurgling noise returned behind the firewall. I suspected a blocked thermostat was keeping the water within the block and causing it to boil so I replaced it.

The following week after that it all happened again and although she got home the car wouldn't start, well on a couple of cylinders it did, so it was trailered to Rovertech for evaluation.

Both head gaskets were blown and the liners in 3 and 4 had slipped which pressurised the sump which explained the oil everywhere.

We still were unable to explain the overheating in the block.

Very sad, the block was U/S so I decided to utilise the new 4.6 block they had and have the engine rebuilt...............my poor wallet

During the rebuild the old water pump was to be used, it was in the cleaning up of this that something interesting was found.............the water pump was OK but have a look at the inlet pipe.....................

It appears that a small piece of copper tube used in the expansion bottle outlet to protect the plastic outlet from being crushed by the clamp holding the hose had come loose and found its way up to the water pump inlet thus severely restricting the flow of coolant into the block, that was the reason for the gurgling sound .

Well, should have the car back tomorrow and the 4.6 coupled with the Haltec and a cam providing low down torque should be interesting .

    Thats Terrible news Richard,

I have had a Td5 with a water pump impeller jammed completely because a piece of stainless rod (exactly like the thermostat centre guide pin ) was lodged in the impeller

Nearly destroyed the engine lucky the owner stopped it as soon as the temp spiked.

You will be very happy with the 4.6 upgrade though

A similar booby-trap is located in the bottom radiator hose... that skinny mid-join that heads North.

When I changed my hoses (after buying the Event Horizon) I found it loose and rattling around inside the hose... had'nt reached the water-pump.

The reinforcing ferrule in the bottom of the previous, leaky pressure tank was also loose enough to remove with fingers...

These, along with slippery liners are the LR approach to in-built obselescence.
    -Or just plain stupid decisions...

I've heard of this before but not with such disastrous results. I'm sure the new 4.6 will be some consolation for your inconvenience- and you even get to blame the wife! Talk about win-win.

The same thing happened to mine!!!!! Except the copper got jammed behind the water pump impeller blades and bent them but still worked. I wondered what the horrible screeching sound was @100km/h, fan belt slipped for a good few seconds.

You're building up a whole new motor and fitting and old water pump?!

Not the time to 'save a dollar'

    I urge you to reconsider!
