    spare wheel carrier, numberplate placement

    Hi guys,

I'm looking to move my numberplate as the spare wheel carrier will block it.

I've considered just moving the whole numberplate swing (thing) across and rebolt it off center. but this will leave the holes exposed.

what have other people done with rear numberplate placement.

Did the same a few weeks ago - moved the number plate to the outside of the wheel carrier. Mine came with a number plate bracket, but should be pretty straightforward to make up a bracket that attaches to the lug bolts of the carrier. Just put a couple of pop rivets in the old number plate holes to blank them off. Not like they won't blend in with the other hundred thousand rivets....

Yep, moved mine to the side and put a new number plate lamp above it. Looks almost factory. The old holes are covered when everything is in its normal place by the spare wheel itself, so I didn't worry too much about the holes - there is other damage on the back end that takes your eye away from that anyway...

    I'll post a pic tonight.

    Cheers - Gav

Have a look at rear photo my LSE in "diesels into RR" thread.
I moved number plate sideways. Has been looked at a number of times by boys in blue, but , touch wood, never asked about it or suggested to move.

    This one...

That's in a similar position to mine. I also have never been pinged by the boys in Blue for this, but when I checked mine, I don't think it is technically legal. I believe you have to be able to see the whole plate from a 45 degree angle from the side, and mine would be stretching the friendship there.

I shifted my number plate and lights to the right as shown in the above pics. It passed several NT rego inspections like that, had an identity check in Vic and another in SA with no adverse comment.

    Thanks guys.

My wheel carrier has been modified, cause it sits alot further out and has extra gussets etc.

I've had a quick go in paint, its a 15" rim and the black circle is by eye, cause even just doubling its radius looked way too big. I've planning to run 31s or 32s.

    anyway questions:
is the black circle about right size?
will i get away with moving the plate on the tailgate?
or will i have to remove the recovery loop and but it down on the bar?

Size looks about right, but you must be putting a lot of stuff to the passanger side of the wheel, as you have left a lot of room there. The RH edge of my tyre is about half way across the car. Tried to take pic last night, but I would have needed to push the car out of the garage to do it.... I'll try again tonight.

Yeah agreed, I've done some quick finger based measurements and seems to be about right.

I bought it like that and powder coated it before realizing, so don't really want to cut it up + room for a hi-lift or shovel.

I think it was modified to take clear a 35" wheel, as the car at one stage had 35s under it

At least you shouldn't have any issues about obscuring your LH tail light. With my high lift ob the back, it covers most of the tail light. I will eventually get around to fitting some new lamps to the rear bar I think.
