    LR parts bin suspension setup

As my '86 Rangie sits, it has King KRFS-01 & KRRS-02 springs, ARB front and rear bars, spare wheel carrier and steel roof rack unknown shocks front and Rancho rear, 245/75R16 AT's on Vogue rims.

I am not terriably happy with the suspension, so thinking of having a play with the bits i have on hand. '89 Rangie parts car has std suspension, '92 D1 parts car has std suspension + Bilstein shocks.

So, thinking std Rangie rear coils for the front, std D1 (progressive) rear springs for the rear + the bilsteins. I have some LRA spring shims if minor leveling is needed.

    Does this sound feasable?

How di i check if the rear leveler is working and whats involved in a rebuild if required? Parts?

    Cheers
    Rick

If the rear coils are green stripe 89-92 then they will give 2inch lift if not sagged. This will give you zero caster, but is OK except IMHO the car is a bit lacking in directional stability. They are 160Lb per inch.

The rear Disco coilds will fit but may be a bit lower than the front, but if your Hydromat is working then it will pump up to normal height. This may still be a bit low.

IMHO the best way to tell if the Hydromat is working is look at the gaiter. if it is dry and has no evidence of oil inside or outside then it is probably OK ( of course the cars are so old now , the oil could have disappeared 10 years ago).
The other way is to do the official test of loading 500Kg of bricks in the back, measure before moving the car, then drive it for 5Km over a normal road, then measure it again immediately. If it has raised then it is OK.

The Disco coils will give a harsher ride on bigger bumps as the soft coils compress with any sort of load at all. LRA orange springs are good if the hydromat is working as they are 180Lb and give about 2inch lift.

Still kicking around what to do here, but swapped the bilsteins into the rangie to replace the rancho (rear) and boge (front) shocks and they have made a huge differance.

May just bite the bullet and get some LRA springs front and rear. They sugest pink (180lb 15.9") front, and white (270lb 16.8") rear.

I am surprised they recommended such heavy springs.
Considering the std fronts are 133Lb/in and the backs are 160lb/in. The rears in front were used by LR as "heavy duty" and 160Lb gives a good ride.

270 lb in the back is MUCH greater than std Disco 225Lb.
Depends what you told them I guess, but I think it will be higher than 2 inches lift unless you have steel bullbar and winch, and plan to carry max load.

Steel ARB front and rear bars, swing out wheel carrier, steel roof rack. It may get a winch, but will change the front springs when and if needed if it does. When loaded for a trip, most weight goes into the camper but there is a 40L Engel and a small amount of gear in the rear of the rangie. Guessing at 50-60kg load on the towball.

I will go to a weigh bridge and get f/r axle weights, but was thinking green (160lb 16.2") front and orange (180lb 17"), purple (220lb 17") or purple/orange (220lb 18") rear as needed.

Green front and orange rear and polyairs is what I have , but no bullbar and no swingaway. At one stage the LRA greens were reduced to 15.6ins which is what I have. This gives 1.5 inches or so, but the OEM greens are 16.2 ins free length , and would probably be good with a bar.
