    Refinishing wood trim

    The wooden door caps in my '88 are looking a bit tired (badly sun faded and water damaged), so I am planning to refinish them. I have sanded back 2 of them so far. The old varnish was sanded back easily and the wood is in good condition underneath. Does anyone have any advice what to do next? I'm a complete novice with anything related to wood. Would a decking oil work? Or some sort of varnish?

    On a previous RRC I had I did the same thing, I sanded back using very fine aluminium oxide paper with the grain, then stained it in the appropriate colour then applied 2 or 3 coats of 2 pack polyurethane clear coating sanding lightly with once again fine paper. They came up a treat and the polyurethane lasts well.

    Hi

    I used a spray pack of Cabothane clear satin interior/exterior varnish when I was making a dash wood strip for my discovery 2. If you prefer they also do a gloss varnish. A light sanding between coats helps give a smooth finish.

    Overall I'm very happy.

    Thanks heaps, guys. I'll have to go to the hardware store and have a look. I think maybe a stain and then some sort of clear over the top. The wood isn't exotic walnut or anything (it just looks like pine to my uneducated eyes) so I think I might stain it.
