    Igntion Issues/What is this from?

    Hay all,

I'm trying to find an intermittment fault, where my RRC drops a cylinder or two and I can smell a petrol, it only happens now and then BUT really annoying and its starting to happen more and more.

So I'm guessing its a electrical issue. So Ive changed Leads, this definately helped with smooth running, but not solution.

I've attached the ignition system on my car, it doesnt look standard. The whole car is not. 4.6 bottom end, 3.9 Hotwire top. R380 Rear maxi.

Does anyone know whcih system this is from. Its a very neat job.

The ignition system is stock standard later model LUCAS (= Left Us Cold And Stranded) which has been shifted to allow the fitting of your second battery. It normally mounts beside the radiator. Best thing to do with it is bin it and fit a Bosch amp as per my thread here:

Also what brand/type of leads are they? If they're Top Gun I have not had a good run with them.

I agree with bee utey here.
As with the leads, happened to have a set of Eagle performance leads I never had the chance to fit on a 5 litre commodore I had... Fit my 3.9 RRC perfectly, and definitely runs a lot sweeter.
Is it still running points or have you converted to electronic ignition?
Have you looked into the rotor arm and the distributor cap?

    G`day ,

if it`only droping one or two cylinders , you`ll be wasting your time looking at the amp .

The system you have is probably from a later discovery , the amp was removed from the side of the dissy and placed were there was less heat , which was an upgrade , though the original electronic ignition was also remote amp .

One of our soft dashes has the same but don`t know if it`s factory .

When , at what revs does it happen , could just be you wires need shielding from the alternator , from your pic .

It may be worth having a look at your spark plugs.

I suppose if your running Hotwire you've got the electronic ignition?
I think be utey is on the money with the coil, however if your still running points i'd be changing the supressor capacitor in the dizi.

I've had quite a good run out of Topgear leads; very good when submerged in water as it turns out...

Bosch induction leads from SC all the way. About $5 each during a sale.

The lump of iron in the front of my POS starts and runs on lpg without any backfires since switching to Bosch 80k kms ago, no longer have probs with distributor cap 'tracking' and plugs don't get that brown / tan lpg coating.

Hay, sorry for late reply, no internet...
Anywho, its all 3.9 97 Discovery top end. Theres no pattern so far that I can see. Sometimes cold, some times hot.

Leads are brand new, made a big difference to running smoother (or old ones were pretty old), they are top gun 10mm. Yep a bit wanky but a mate got them cheap for me.

Yep, checked cap and plugs, all seem ok.

Its weird, If I turn it off and wait 5 seconds it fixes itself!

I'll reroute the coil lead away from the alt and see if this helps, then Bee utey I think we are going your way. I'd rather fix this first though just so I'm sure I've fixed the problem before I modify.

Do you all agree its an igntion issue?
