Should be a nuts and bolts swap, nothing too hard.
G'day fellas,
I'm seriously considering buying a 2-door rangey with a 3.9 in it to swap into my 88 4-door.
How hard would it be to hook the 3.9 up to my 4-speed Auto and slot the 3.5 back into the 2-door which has a 5-speed manual? Is it a straight swap or will I need to swap bits and pieces between the cars?
Cheers,
Nick.

I seriously hope the 3.9 is worth it, all the 3.9's I have dealt with recently have had cracked block syndrome. One decent cooking and they're toast. Personally I'd stick with the 3.5 until I could afford a properly re-linered big engine.
As for the swap, some of the engine components would have to be swapped esp. inlet manifolds, front cover and pulley maybe, spigot bush in the crankshaft rear etc.
Fairly stright swap, I've just stuck a 3.9 in mine to replace the tired 3.5, but take Bee Utey's advise on the 3.9. The one I bought I knew the history of, and hasn't been cooked, but they are fragile if they have been.
I've kept my 3.5 and may rebuild this one day as these blocks don't suffer the same issues the 3.9's do.

I'll definitely see how the 3.9 goes before putting it in my 88 Hi-line, it's currently in the 79 and running, so we'll see..Even if the engine is a dud, the car is cheap enough that I'll be able to pinch the bullbar, tyres and suspension for quarter of the price of a brand new set.![]()
