I agree with you 100% ......and like you I'm also doing up my RRC.
In my case I believe there arn't that many good examples of stock 2 Door classic around these days and good 4 door examples are going the same way as well.
Given you can still source a lot of s/hand accessories cheaply and most new parts are reasonable priced compared to other 4WD (who don't have the same capabilities) still makes them an attractive vehicle to own.
Someone on this forum referred to all of us owners of older Land rovers as being enthusiasts and I think that about sums us up beautifully.
Like Phillip, a Disco TD5 for me would be the next logical choice and while they are more complicated they pale into insignificance against a D3 or D4 or later model Range Rovers.
My Dad used to say anyone can buy any marque, but they have to be able to afford to maintain it and I'm not sure if I would venture down the road in owning a second hand D3 or D4 or later model RR when they are 7 -10 years old and in my price bracket :(
