This RRC is driving me nuts!!!!!

    Ok gang,
I'm coming close to throwing in the towel, yep selling it. It's a RRC with a 4.6 bottom end and a Hotwire 3.9 top end. I've replaced idle control valve, coil with a buteey special (thank you btw) and I've noticed it gotten a lot worse with the heat,

    Symptoms are;

Just before it starts running on a couple less cyclinders, it starts to shutter, a little bit,
Then drops a cylinder or two( I think well that's what it feels like)
Then there's a strong petrol smell.
    And occasionally it stalls completely.

I thought it might ignition cos it happened yesterday and I pulled over and pulled off a couple of leads on each bank, one affected it more than the other. And the it came good.....

If I turn it off, wait 5-10 seconds, it comes good.

I was going to bring it to a mechanic but I know they will say cos it's a intermittent illy, it's like finding a needle in a hay stack.

    HELP !!!!!!!!!!!

    Cheers Nat

    It is vapour lock?

i'm gonna take a guess and say ignition module, they seem to be one of the most problematic bits of the EFI V8s

Were both heads rebuilt before fitting? Sticking valves give a similar symptom, if you pull over when it is missing, and let it idle, will it slowly regain all cylinders?

Put a fuel pressure gauge on it, see if the pressures remain consistent. Or just replace the pump, strainer and filter. There may be connectors between the fuel pump and the fuse that are overloaded from a worn pump. I have bypassed a stuffed connector in the LH front door pillar on a RRC before.

ok, going to replace the fuel pump, any suggestions on this? Just a standard one will do the job? 3.9?
AND I'll get the the injectors cleaned and I'll check the connecters, I'll let ya know how this all goes

Seriously the first things to check are sensors. You could have a simple sensor fault causing the ECU to enter limp mode. hence keying off for 10 seconds clears until fault is triggered again.

If you claim it comes on when you get hard on the gas I would suspect faulty MAF, possibly over vault triggering ECU to enter limp mode?

You can test the MAF using a multimeter. Also the TPS can be tested and adjusted as well.

Then onto the ignition module, then fuel system/injectors.

Does anyone near you have a Rovergauge set up that could plug into the ecu to check inputs? This has recently helped me to quickly diagnose simple sensor faults and also notify of recorded fault codes currently present in the ecu.
Unfortunately I think the Gold Coast is a touch far, and I certainly don't have a cord long enough
