Non Rover V8's for a classic RR - opinions...

So, this is all hypothetical for me as I've just stuck a good condition 3.9 in mine which should last years, but I was talking to a chap the other day (who is not on this forum...yet) and he is currently sticking a Toyota 1UZ-FE (4 ltr) from a Lexus in his Classic RR at the moment.

He has previously had other Classics that he has done extensive work to including a heavily modified Rover 4.6 that went very well, but he didn't want to go to the time or expense of doing another Rover engine.

From what he tells me they are plentiful, reliable and cheap. They also have an Aluminium block I believe - I'm no expert on these so some of these details could be wrong.

It got me to thinking about engine conversions, and what would be a good replacement if/when the 3.9 goes to god, as I sure as **** won't be rebuilding it.

There are also other UZ variants - the 2UZ-FE which is a 4.7 ltr unit. But has a cast iron block, and the 3UZ-FE which is a 4.3 ltr alloy block.

So, does anyone have any experience with these units? They are all available from Japan as front cuts that include the loom and computers, and they aren't all that expensive. I was thinking that while they may not quite have the same get up and go as say a 350 Chev, they would be a lot cheaper, and more modern.

Opinions, experience and thoughts about these or any other modern V8 engine conversion is sought....

Oh, and I'm not after 'Why don't you rebuild the Rover engine' or 'A rover engine can be made to be reliable and powerful...' That's not the point of this thread. I'm not planning on doing anything yet, just throwing it out there for others to put there points of view forward on some more modern Jap/Euro engines that may make a suitable transplant.

    Cheers - Gav.

One of the strongest small capacity alloy V8 engines ever made, 6 bolt crank mains, 32 valves and the 1UZFE (4 litre) is capable of 800+ horsepower with NO internal mods. The rods in them are almost pure high performance from factory. The 3UZFE (4.3) is a fair bit less tougher although it still has 6 bolt crank main caps etc the rods and pistons are 'lighter' duty. Still pretty strong though as factory max rpm is conservative at 6500....

I have had both engines and they are silent, strong, VERY economical (our current LS430 is 13.2/100 city cycle, 9.8 highway cycle) and easy to do cambelts on etc etc.

A gem of an engine but unless using the VVTi version you will need to ensure your gearing is lower in the RRC as the peak torque is a little later than the 4.6 etc etc.

Assume you mean the top end due to the 16 valve heads hanging off each side? Assuming they will still fit, but would there be issues with exhausts, etc?

More to do with the camshafts, 2 off, in each head, they are physically as wide across the shoulders as a big block

You learn something every day - I didn't think there were any redeeming features about late model dunny doors.... As my work car only has the anaemic 3 litre V6, there is nothing good about that one.

Good to know the V8's had something going for them.
