You could drive an SI reg. vehicle virtually every weekend. All it requires is to get your club committee onside and authorise plenty of other club's events. Have the authorisation recorded in the Club minutes and published in the newsletter. Take copies of both with you and no problems.

I can't see any changes to the scheme in Qld. I had considerable contact with Qld Transport & Main Roads officials when an office bearer in a car club. I gather that the dept's (or bureaucrats) unwritten position was:-
1 - Having a special interest reg. scheme is part of the national code of practice which the dept. is a party to.
2 - Such scheme serves no useful purpose and is something extra to administer, and the bureaucrats would prefer to be quit of it rather than expand it.
3 - The scheme discounts registration and costs the dept. money.
4 - The scheme is wide open to abuse and is regularly abused. The dept. & police do not have the on road resources to stop and interrogate the bona fides of every SI reg. vehicle found on the road.
The problem I had with the scheme is it was useless as tits on a bull. You see I was a member of the Citroen car club.... Most of the runs were the other side of melbourne, which is a 5hour round trip with two young kids in the back of the car ............ In a car that quite likely hadn't been driven in 6months as is can't legally leave the yard. Infact, it can't even be legally parked outside of private property. For all intents and purposes and "club permit" vehicle is unregistered, but granted approval for use on the roads ONLY to attend club events..... Or the incredibly grey area of "road testing".
I remember thinking I'd give my old car a run.... One day I took it upto the exhaust place to be looked at... the following upto Pirtek to match some crusty old hydraulic lines on it.................. I'll be damned if some @sshole didn't report me for "using the car outside of club events". I was contacted and asked why the car had been seen on the roads two days in a row. WTF ?? I was so seriously p!$$ed off with the whole caper I just parked the car up in the backyard and let the rego lapse. The scheme wasn't so much of an issue as everyone else that was a member of a club thought THEY personally should be policing the scheme. Rather than the police.
This new scheme is BRILLIANT, there is no grey areas. You fill in the logbook, your good to go. I've even be pulled over by toggies .. (traffic cops). These guys have you booked before they even pull you over. He had a look around the car, asked to look at my logbook. "Gee's this scheme is fantastic" ...was his comment to me as he said "off you go".
You should get all the car clubs together to try and get the Victorian scheme into all the other states as a "national" type scheme. It really is fantastic.

I have a vehicle on SI rego in Qld with the Series Landy OWners Inc. The Club has done a fair bit of research confirming what is/is not allowed by Main roads/police/insurance people/etc. with Brian has clarifiying the main points in an earlier post.
In the couple of years the club has been operational, I do not recall one single issue with members using their vehicles under the SI scheme. If you play by the rules and do not abuse the system, I honestly do not see any problems.
Log Books will be and no doubt have been cheated. I was a line haul trucker. I know about log books. Why do you think they were called "swindle sheets". I reckon there are plenty of drivers who take a punt on not being pulled over and don't fill in the book until they are.
Qld. Tpt. bluntly told us club officials at a training session that it was not the dept's intention to provide discounted registration for almost unlimited use, but rather to give owners of classic, historic, vintage, and veteran vehicles irregular use of the vehicles for hobby purposes.
There is a group here who have been agitating for years for a single club plate issued to an individual which could be put on any of their 30+ years old cars rather than register each one individually. This is so laughable it has lost its humour. Dept., Police, insurance companies are stone against it. The group says they can't afford to register all their old cars and a single plate would allow them to be used. The depts. attitude is "sell a few and then you can afford to register the rest".
Be thankful for any Special Interest Reg. scheme you have. It could be worse. Don't stir up the bureaucrats by asking for change. You may get it.
I don't buy that .... One of the guys in our club forgot to fill in his book (it's actually really easy to do). Not filling in the book in something for the police to check and no-one else to worry about. I find it highly unlikely there would be extensive rorting of the scheme. Who really is going to save money by running a 30year old car ...... there's just no way given the huge upkeep required.
Remember it's an unregistered car, if we don't fill in the logbook, the fines are close to
$800 :eek: :eek: A permit car isn't registered, it's a permit to drive an unregistered car on the road 90days a year.
