Towing

When I moved up from vic I had an 8x5 I was towing with a double bed standing up vertically, a fridge, all the woman's clothes (bloody loads of em!) a small toolbox and a big one https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...013/04/872.jpg
And I could do a steady 90 with ease 110 if the go pedal was half way down apart from on hills. The blue box weighs a LOT it's full dont know the specific weight but I'm sure I overloaded the trailer. Couldn't do more than 60 on the hills out of Sydney but on the flat she was ok. Was using my 3.5 flapper and the rear springs were compressed rather low from the weight of it.

Putting the woman on the front of the trailer may have helped with load distribution slightly.

Anyway, a little engine worked hard will always lose out to a bigger engine that's loafing. I think any classic with a 4.6 would be a far better towing car . . . though I'm yet to actually do that with mine. So don't expect too much from the poor thing.

Agree with sentiments re. small vs sensible-sized engines. - The only other disappointment' of an engine I've had was the HZ Holden 253 / 4.2 litre V8. Both the Ford 250 and Chrysler 245 (4.0 litre) straight-sixes were better engines in every area except top-end speed.

With the strong and heavy body that everyone raves about, putting anything less than a 5 litre powerplant (in 1980's+ technology) in it was both penny-pinching and incompetant, IMHO. Today's RR can get away with 4.6 because the efficiency etc is higher.

If you need to tow with a 1990's car, you're better off with a Nissan Patrol, diesel or petrol.

I can't see any issue with the original post, with the taller tyres you are probably nearly one gear higher than standard anyway, then expecting to tow a caravan uphill in overdrive is unrealistic. The most cost-effective option available to you is to change down a gear when necessary. Fuel consumption seems excessive but it sounds as though you may have been labouring the car pretty hard.

Hi again yeh well got over it now home for a while till i tow again
one thing though i took off a hayman reese tow hitch the other day and put on a arb rear bar with tow point and it only has four points of contact
on car were the other one had 6 and only 1250 kl towing have i done the right thing looks good though
