I can't say I've heard of anyone getting that gearstick apart and back together again, but I could be wrong. Can't the boot just slide over with a fair bit of KY Jelly???
I bought a NOS gearstick and tried it out on my gearbox and the little white rubber pad near the bottom disintegrated . . . just old age. Now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to replace that one.

I haven't really checked it out, but I thought that join was bonded somehow. I figured it was done to reduce vibrations since the simpler Series gear levers from about the same time were just a bit of metal.
Now, I'm assuming we're talking about this sort of lever?

Bang on with the part ID Davo and I reckon even using Glide or wet stuff the ring wouldn't survive an intrusion from something that size.
The thing looks like it could be unscrewed but I wanted to make sure it wasnt damaged in the process.
Well I have been wet sanding the shine off the paintwork for a week or so now in dribs and drabs, One conclusion I came to was that the thing wasnt going to be straight without an awful lot of work because when you use a large block sander the dents and pimples get left shiny.
And boy theres a lot of them........
Add to that the right rear panel which has sustained damage from what looks like the walls of a washout someone climbed and cant be fixed with bog or a hammer while on the car.
Lucky for me I have a spare in good nick apart from where some butcher mounted an LPG filler point and this will go on the car at a later date if I cant persuade the original panel to its undented form.
Honestly Magnesium alloy panels scare me and although the Birmabrite seems better than straight aluminium panels im still scared and will keep the damaged bits for later investigation if they prove too hard to massage.

Jobs list getting smaller, 4 years in storage didnt speed up the process BUT...
New Clutch master and slave
New starter
Bigger EFI radiator installed
New water pump and fan clutch.
Way too much electrical to banish Lord Lucas Prince of Darkness including removal of a mile and a half of extra magic smoke leaks and accessory wiring.
Replaced Hazard flasher can with Wagner electronic unit and Voila bright hazards as well as cleaning the contacts on the stoneage hazard switch.
Carbies rekitted and balanced
Dizzy overhauled, new points plugs, leads cap and rotor
All cracked and faded lenses replaced
Diff lock Vac issues repaired
Headlights removed and repaired
Bodywork de-grunged.
Engine and lighting electrics now complete apart from the Indicator flash can which is a weird pin out (Clues appreciated) and I have replaced as many earths as I could find.
Those big-ass Mirrors now gone and i have genuine mirrors for both sides when i find the mounting kits to suit.
Interior electrics and dash cluster next, seatbelts (Seat mounted inertia reels) id like to swap for seats from a later RRC but im not sure if there are belt mounts in the body or not.
Then the gear shift new gaiter (Hens teeth) and tfer case lever boot and some carpet and a clean and she should be good for body work which is another job im happy to leave for a while.
Suspension, springs, shocks etc all good.
brake master next coz its a bit ordinary and I have replacement hoses and calipers as well.
So probably half way!

Count the bog patches ... there is probably about 30 there !! the roof looked quite ok before I started too :) pretty much every one of those filler marks is so thin you can see the metal through the bog.... but they are still there! They would have stood out like dogs balls if they weren't filled in though.

Wow ... I just replied to a post from 6 years ago .... How on earth did that happen [bigwhistle]
Weirdly as its been through minimal hands the boggery is nil apart from the Factory/CKD and Paint is the lowest priority now.
She sat for over 4 years in storage after I moved off the farm and this means she had more to fix lol
So Mech/Elec is now my focus.
I buffed with green cutters most of the left side for giggles and thats restored the paint id scuffed in all its patina'd glory and apart from the bonnet and top section of the tailgate which need paint it can stay that way for now.
The roof?
Well it has a Dealer fitted screw on luggage rack which looks like it came off an XC wagon and mustve been for cosmetic reasons and as it plugs the screw holes with screws can stay for now too.
The Gotti's come off (Refurb) for a set of Vogue rims with Michelin's.
And im just going to enjoy the thing until a mate who used to run a Euro smash repairer develops a bad enough twitch to yell that he will paint the damned thing because its giving him conniptions which is apparently an affliction anally retentive and OCD former Panel beaters aquire in the presence of anything proudly acclaimed as Patina'd with the finishing touch being my unveil moment of 4 lt of finest quality paint factory Peugeot anthracite acrylic (Its only 6 yrs old, I'll strain it through a stocking or something).
His screams will be stuff of legend, mystical words such as COBRA PAINT and Kin philistine have I not taught you a thing and muttering about pigment quality and flow straight off the gun like they did in the sistine chapel until I calm him with a few snorts from a handy tak cloth.....
