And she has tidied up nicely with a fair amount of electrical work mainly restoring earth points, adding a few more and removing a few miles of cable added for christ knows what over the years.

The steering and suspension are all good with nolathane and oem rubber having been used underneath which kinda suggests the PO knew what he was doing as the old girl drives and rides far better than I thought she would.

I stripped the exterior of pinstriping and decals, removed window tint, dropped and replaced fluids and apart from fitting a refurbed steering box, reclaimed interior carpet and assorted underlay she is done apart from a coat of paint and fitting the original steel wheels which also need painting.

2 questions for you learned Gents and Ladies.

What colour should the wheels be for a faithful colour match, are there any black bits on the rims I need to paint on?

    And what colour is she?

re the colour, a Dulon alloy plate/sticker has Midnight and some barely legible chook scratchings on it best deciphered as 449-343-15?

I believe the colour to be Charcoal black metallic code 574 AKA Niagara Black Metallic/574 but this doesnt match with anything I have found for early 80's colours.

The paint does have metal flake in it and it is original paint as I cant find any signs of a respray and as im currently half way through the body prep for paint I need to order the colour now before it gets too cold to paint.

the other question is where do I get the Range Rover Decals for the bonnet and tailgate?

I figured id just add an AULRO membership sticker to add a touch of green but failing that a good source of decals would be nice.

Bling will consist of a carbon fibre style "Wrap" of the Grille and headlight surrounds as I suspect I can get away with this and remain half faithful to originality and failing that its satin black paint which I need for the front bumper anyway.

Im also adding a set of large mirrors as the original units are rusty and IMO too small.

For the time being I am also leaving the roof alone apart from a quick and nasty coat of paint as it has 3 holes drilled in it where CB cable kits have gone AND someone has bolted a chrome wagon roofrack to the roof.

I have a spare Roof which will be painted before being fitted but I suspect there are a few tricks to mounting these.......

    Suggestions?

    Cheers,
    Tony

Gotti's for that Gangsta bling lol

The were added as a dealer option when the car was ordered, Will dig up the receipt and give you some more info on them, Originally polished alloy with gold highlights they will be off for a polish and resto.

I had a good look at them to try and figure if they were actually a 3 piece wheel but couldnt tell for sure but either way they will be nice polished up.

I just did some research on the wheels and they are infact 3 piece AND they still make them.

I'm pretty sure that was an option at the time. I think I saw it listed somewhere. My '83 had the same thing, complete with metal strips screwed onto the roof to take the load of the suitcase or whatever you were supposed to put up there. Of course, some screws had come out but I think the headlining might survive the water that leaked in over the years.

    Ta Davo,

Well its a pet hate of mine and they don't normally last this long on the car after I get them.

Paint and body prep now underway with the bonnet looking like there is some work ahead.

Its not going to be perfect but close will be nice, Had the colour match done and it is Niagara black metallic which doesn't show up until the 90's in Classics and Disco's so christ know how it got onto an 83 from new, One of those weird LandRover quirks I guess.

So onwards and upwards with sanding, bogging etc etc

My roof rack had rusted out from the inside and was one of the first things to go.

Jen AKA SWMBO already cleaned out the inside of the beast including the spare carbies and the air cleaner assy as the front had only vinyl remnants left and we have a reasonable hump carpet set scavenged from the auto 84 RR now a parts car and paddock pig and we are hoping we can use it in the manual car.

The 83 Center console is different in shape to the 84 Auto console/cubby box and its a choice yet to be made but either will need some work to be presentable.

I bought a Gearshift/Diff lock boot as well as a hi/lo boot with need to be fitted as the original units were fragged and this will be tackled after the car is painted or if we get bored with bodywork.

The gear stick seems to be a 2 piece unit and im going to have to separate the 2 to get the new boot on the stick, is there a trick to this or is it a matter of 12 inch shifter and brute force?

We have also removed the rubber sheet from the back of the 84 as the 83 had neither carpet or insulation in the cargo section and this too will be added and I need to source a set of front footwell carpets as they are shagged on the 84.

Something else im happy about is the total lack of evidence there was ever an LPG setup on the 83 which means less holes to contend with. (YAY!)

Finally I got some bling for the old girl in the form of a HF CB radio, almost period correct I have a GE B model and more fitting a GE A model, both originally 18 Channel units but now 40 and I like to think that the GE CB's are the top of the line when it comes to 27 Mhz CB's and the only thing I could think of to trump this was a Yaesu FT707.

What about UHF I hear you cry?

Covered that base with a Phillips FM320.

More as it comes to hand.

    Tony
