Lost my baby to the sea today

Well I've investigated and she's a goner :(
There's only 2 other ones advertised in townsville, one I went to go look at yesterday....up for $3800 and has been for over a month.
Was on WA plates and a backpacker owned it.
I went down with my clipboard and I found it needing:
Drag link balljoints
Steering drop arm ball joint
Font and rear trailing arm bushes
Valley gasket
Rocker cover gaskets
Timing cover gaskets
Sump gasket
Gearbox sump gasket
Transfer box output seals
Both swivel seals
Engine mounts
Body mounts
Rear discs and pads
A frame ball joint
Rear diff shock (totally missing)
Rear seat belt
Rear wheel arch stoved in
Washer pump
Rear tailgate
Rear wiper arm
Windscreen
Engine very very grungie
All aux belts
Steering box
Several rust holes in chassis
Several rust holes in body
Sunroof seal bonded in
Petrol system missing -only has gas....not much good if you ever run out of fuel and I know nothing abut gas!
2 tyres needed
Coolant hoses splitting
Dizzy cap
Scuttle panel beat to buggery
And that's just what I can remember off the top of my head!
NOT worth the asking price in a million years so I left him to it.
Going to go check out the only other one in town tomorrow after work hopefully.....fingers crossed its half decent as there's nothing remotely near here other than one in cairns which guys just emailed me back about and sounds to me like it has a slipped liner.

I've been stuck and that didn't work ;)

We dug a bloody deep hole, clearanced the cable etc and then when all set up we pulled a 33" wide trench through a sandbank ;)

It's a good theory but doesn't always work!

Nope, but it's better than bloody nothing :D
This was what I got taught by the old man as being SOP during his time in LROC in the 70s.
As Tombie says, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
The suction effect of wet sand is something no 4WDer wants to experience.
My SOP for sand bogging is dig it out as much as possible to negate the sucking effect of the sand (assuming it's wet, but works with dry sand too) before any sort of recovery attempt, winching or snatching/towing.
Actually, that's the same SOP for any bogging, when in doubt, dig your way out :)
Like I said, I'd fight tooth and nail before I let anything claim my ride, it's mine, **** off and get your own :p
Best of luck sourcing a replacement Fonfe, you'll be back chasing oil leaks sooner than you know.

$3800??? He's dreamin'. If I were you, I would pull my beloved Rangie to bits and clean up and keep everything I could. Then I'd be ready when a good one came up, which you'll find if you check pretty much constantly. A slipped liner isn't a problem in your new car if you've already got a good engine handy.

Heaps unlucky mate - it's never a good situation to be in.

Was this a townsville beach? Which one?

Better off looking interstate, QLD Rangies are rust buckets for the most part.

I wouldn't waste my time trying to resurect a submerged 4WD, keep the good bits and scrap the rest cut your losses now you'll be better off for it. Sadly another RRC off to the big test track in the sky :(:(

I got one!!! Picked her up tonight.
Didnt go look before as was way out of my price range but they took my offer of half the asking price.
92 vogue SE :D but its really long like an LSE, but only has an SE badge?
(Not too clued up on the RRC specs, waaaaay before my time!)
Pics in the correct section of course.
She does need some work though as EAS is on its arse but I'm pretty good with the systems on the d3/4/sports and the LMs so as long as I can get the info I should be able to work it out.
Any net links or info anyone has or tips much appreciated ;)

Going to hang on to the drowned one, if I come across good running gear in a bit I shall get her up and running and use her for bush bashing only to keep the new one in the great condition she's already in.

OMG .... You didn't immediately flush and drain all the running gear :eek: :eek: :eek: I would have thought they were the only salvagable bits. All you needed to do a week ago was pull the plugs out, drain the sump, crank her over to clear the water from the bores..... then run it from a small gravity tank (eg lawn mower/motor bike) tank. Flush the axles/box/case and drive around the yard a few times to spread the fresh oil into every crevice.

Having never done this I can't be sure it would work, but I can't see why it would (unless you ran the motor until it hydrolocked :confused: ).
