    Power steering Pump

    Hi oh knowledgeable ones! I have recently bought a RRC and they (ACT gov inspectors) say it has an oil leak (what!, seriously?) I know, ridiculous assumption. However, I need to rectify "it". Seriously, it's not oil per se though the accumulated build up on chassis undoubtedly is! The problem is power steering fluid leaking from the pump. The previous owner informs me that it has had a "kit" through it recently, but it still leaks. My question (of course there's a question) is what to do. Buy another kit, or replace it. Regardless of rego checks, I don't want a dodgy steering ! Advise please? Also, best place to buy either?

    There are 3 options. Buy a seal kit and do it yourself.(local could be all 4x4 kotara or evilbay) 2 . Get it rebuilt by a professional $ 650 was the quote I got for my defenders pump. Or 3. Buy a new pump from u.k for the same price and get a few extras to " justify " the shipping costs

    $650 for a pump, I bought from from the UK a few weeks ago, it was around $80.
    Unless you mean BOX, then that is different, they are around $600 from the UK plus shipping.

    Strewth Frantic, I nearly choked on my coffee! I think I will just replace it for $80. After all it's the steering, kind of important.

    Time & time again I'm seeing the cost of buying from the UK INCLUDING postage to be way cheaper than buying local. Just it takes a while to get here sometimes.

    The last person I talked to about leaking power steering boxes on classics told me often people only replace the outer seals thinking that is all that is needed. However the outer seals are just dust seals. The seal that needs to be replaced, if I remember him correctly, is the 3rd seal in.

    Maybe this is what has happened in your case. Hence the reason it is leaking again.

    The seal kit is not very expensive, i've got one at home and a box to fit it into. If you want, i can fit it into the box i have and sell it to you for an amount we can discuss in a PM. I'm in Melbourne so i'd have to freight it to you.

    Hi Jazzman

    Thats a kind offer than I may well take you up on. I have just put a stop leak additive in the fluid reservoir and I am hopeful that this will fix the problem at least in the short term. It's going back for a rego inspection retest next week so we will see if they pick up on it.

    I was thinking about this and I thought I should mention that my completely brand-new steering leaks - from the intake hose where it's bolted to the pump. There's a stupid little seal arrangement there that I can't sort out, so maybe that's just your problem as well.
