    1976 4.4 Classic won't kick over.

    Tried starting it, but wouldn't even kick over. Battery fine. Did notice that when I turned the key to start that the stereo stops and loses it's lights.

    Any ideas, much appreciated.

    Check the earth strap from battery to body and engine. Also the cleanliness of battery terminal posts/ clamps

    Earth strap fine, new battery 3 months ago.

    Found it was the main power lead shorting out on the starter heat shield.
    Wrapped some heater hose around the bare wire to insulate and works fine now.

    Why was it not already insulated??

    Being 37 years old might have something to do with the insulation not being up to scratch
