just carefully dribble oil in until the last 10mm of the damper itself feels resistance when sticking it back in the top.
I would use a light oil; singer sewing machine oil works OK, or a 15w40 motor oil, or even ATF .

Hi All,
I'm new to the world of petrol LR's, and recently bought a 1983 CKD Range Rover (4 door 4 speed).
Can anyone tell me how to fill the dash pots (I know you take the top off), but how full? And is there some procedure.
The Td5 Disco I usually commute in has dropped it's pants (major oil leak from the thread of the sump plug after a butcherous mechanical workshop who shall remain nameless, got hold of it with the PO [should see some of the dodgy crap going on under the bonnet!]).
And hence i have to drive the RR to Wollongong for all my uni exams
Just want to make sure the dash pots are full and if not top them up, but i have no documentation at all about the car! Google hasn't found me very much at all, and not sure how to narrow down my search.
Cheers
Will

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
So you basically keep dipping it back in until you feel resistance?
Cheers

Yup, just remove the damper, dribble a little oil in, say 10ml and test by refitting the damper, but not screwing it down just pushing it in until you feel resistance for the last 10mm or so.
Don't worry if you overfill it, just keep inserting and removing the damper, wiping the excess oil off until you obtain the correct level, grasshopper.

Thanks Justic will do.
Dad calls me Grasshopper too! Haha
Wonder why...

Ha Ha I used the grasshopper term as if we are teaching a novice in the dojo about SU type carb adjustments, as you are probably too young to know what they are

Hi Will,
You can use engine oil to refill the carburetor piston dampers.
My Haynes manual says to top up the oil level to the top of the hollow piston rod that you see when you unscrew it from the the top of carburetor.
Slowly insert the piston damper back into place.

Oh I've played with a few carburettors, most of them are too old to have dash pots though!!! (1909 SCAT with a big Zenith for example). And with motorbike carbies in my buggy, but dash pots are new! Haha
Cheers

I've been slack and often just squirted in ATF and overfilled mine many times over the years, and it hasn't seemed to have cause any problems. The diaphragm don't seem to of been affected from the excess oil. I'd suggest you do as Justin says, he knows best, but at least if you stuff up a bit you should still be ok.
Adam.
