    1st gear ZF

Is is possible to select 1st gear in a ZF auto? Also does the torque converter lock up in first gear if the centre diff is locked in? I've got a '88 RRC.

    Yes and No.

You should be able to select 1st gear using the auto gear lever assuming its setup and adjusted correctly. Then lift the lever and slide it into 2nd and again into third, from there you should be able to just slide it forward into drive. The torque convertor seems to lockup somewhere between 80 and 85km/h. I don't believe that having the centre diff locked has any bearing on the torque convertor locking up. Mine only locks when in drive at or above the speeds mentioned - it does not lockup in other gears.

Maybe my lever is not set correctly. I will have to figure out how to pull it to bits. I can see it looks as though i'm meant to be able to select 1st. But it only shows 2,3 and D next to the lever.
