A diesel in a Range Rover sacrilege.
Of all the dirty, stinking, noisy, crude things to do.
Honestly if you want a diesel in a Range rover.......you cant afford to run it so buy a D2 Td5 (great car). Im biased and admit it.
Go out for a drive in an L322 V8 a good one (dont mess about with one that some cheap skate has run into the ground) come back and tell me that it isnt a magnificent machine.
If you drive all the RRs from start to current model you can feel the evolution in each newer variant, when I get into an L322 I can feel the P38 grinning through.
At the end of the day it will cost you a small fortune to run any of these Marques, and its got bugger all to do with it being an oil burner or on Gas or petrol its all the other things that cost the money.

Its just a car, get over it. Now if you go to the UK, you could buy, now wait for it, a range rover with a diesel in it, sacrilege, how dare landrover do that.:p

Got those diesel p38's here too. Originally sold for about 20 grand less than the v8's.now selling for double the price.

Funnily enough I saw a rusty red RRC diesel today! Seen it a few times but never paid much attention to it till today as I heard it in traffic :D
No idea what motor is in it though.

I'm with Bee Utey on this one - RRC + 4.6 top hat engine with hotwire + Scorcher. Still looks original but goes much better.

The diesel p38's had a 2.5 litre lump that was hopelessly underpowered. BMW unit I believe. So sluggish in such a heavy car. There are a few "grey imports" about in oz.

270Nm and 100kw (got the brochure here). Not earth shattering, but not a slug either.
Allegedly 170km/h max, 14.3s 0-100 (manual), 15.8s (auto), 8.9 l/100km on the open road, 12.8/100 urban.
Compared to 22l/100 urban and 12.5 l/100km open road on the V8's.

I'm sure they can be tuned up past that easily. I found a ROM dump from one online, so at least one person is tuning them.

They are pulling very good money compared to the petrols at the moment.

I guess it depends on what you wish to do with the car.

If its your daily driver, and you are looking at having kids in it, amd the better half, then a soft dash classic, P38 or L322. The air conditioning in the hard dash classics leaves allot to be desired, but this may not be such an issue in Tassie's climate.

Keep in mind its a car, and a classic will be at least 20 years old, and a P38 at least 10.

Depends on your body shape / size also and whats comfy for you, I still feel my 95 P38 is by far more comfy than any classic I have been in, and has more comfy seats than the standard seats in my L322. The "lux" seats in the L322 are on par with the P38 standard fitment, I couldn't afford a bells and whistles L322 ;)

If you want to go bush bashing, buy a classic, more bits and easy to modify, not saying a P38 isnt.

Boot space, whilst the P38 doesn't have heaps for a car its size, it has more than a classic! The boot in a LSE is the same as a 100 incher.

Safety, if your putting your kids in it, a P38 is a much more modern design with far more saftey features built in. If you have seen a rolled classic, you may want a P38.

I have to admit I miss my 88 classic, it was to me the best car to drive, was so floaty. Depends if you want hard sporty or soft floaty.

Maintenance - I would say a P38 is more demanding, and will hurt you sooner if not kepts in good nick, not to say I haven't sunk money into classics for stupidmaintenance things that should have been done. Parts are fairly cheap if you know where to shop, but some things are that little bit cheaper for the classic, like tires etc.

Fuel economy, well around town a well sorted 3.9 classic will do in the order of 18L/100, but in real life it will probably be 20 plus anywhere upto 30. The P38 should get you a bit less with my worst non towing figures being 23L/100 but around town in the high teens. You can spend 3-10K putting a 4.6L in with bells and whistles, but that biys you ALLOT of fuel also. Put it on LPG if the hip pocket is that hard hit, but take it into account if you really want to drive around a 3 tonne brick with an engine designed in the 50/60's.

You ask about the stereo, you will probably be dissapointed with both compared to the mobile boom boxes in kia's and honda's etc these das. I thinkk the factory head unit in the 95-2000 P38 is a dissapointment, the sound system behind it is great once fed clean sound. Whereas I think the system in the 93-95 classic is great sounding for the car. But unless you get a fancier P38 there's no factory GPS or fancy displays, and just tape decks with CD stackers :) Ipods are aftermarket fits ;)

That being said, I think the classic is the best looking car, but I now have a L322 and its just so much more modern in almost every respect, and to a large degree so much better built and reliable, not by a margin, but by a huge amount, touch wood.

I would have the mod cons, reliability, and economy of a diesel L322, with the seating comfort/leg space and ride quality/handling of a P38, with the exterior appearance and styling of a classic, if I could.

Not according to the brochures. Did they change how this was measured?
Classic is 1.02m^3 seats up, 2.00 m^3 seats down.
P38 is 0.62 and 1.52m^3
