    Drop arm repiar kit

Well I don`t post here that often as there is not much of the old ute that is range rover. But the under carriage is and in particular for the topic of this thread the drop arm or pitman arm. The ball joint is just a tad stuffed. Have had a look around for options. Ther are two, a new arm complete with ball joint and a repair kit for the ball joint. Has any one used the repair option and has it been worth it ? Is there any specialised tools needed ? Can it be done in-situ or does the arm come off ? I am a maintenance fitter so able to cause a fair bit of carnage with a spanner. Which means I`m not particularly concerned about fixing the ball joint or replacing the arm. Just would like a bit of info before I start. All ways helps if you know what your in for.

    Repair kit's OK.

I've had some success with the repair kit which includes a spring, seat, pin, boot and some other stuff I can't recall. It's a bit fiddly, but easy repair. Pushing the pin up against the spring to get the cap and circlip on was the awkward bit. I needed another hand!

I have a late 1981 model and bought a repair kit but was told by the local tyre/ steering place that mine isn't removable. So maybe they're not all repairable?

I just did the droparm balljoint in a 300tdi defender today.
The trick to getting the end cap and circlip back in is a 3 leg gear puller, worked a treat.

My hassle was getting the arm off the bottom of the sector shaft. Cleaned rust off splines, penetrating oil etc first but still tore my Pitman arm puller in half. Ended up getting a mobile mechanic with a hydraulic puller and he took an hour. Used a vice and socket to compress the cap/spring on the new joint and fit circlip.

Just make sure that yours is a serviceable type. The earlier ones weren't, if it has the circlip on the underside then it's ok.
