Front floor carpet and foam/rubber undermat.

For those who have done it before...
Is the front floor carpet one piece or two? And how about the thick rubber and foam undermat...

When taking out the placky seat surround - checking seat ECU - I found the foam was wet under the driver's feet, and I'd like to take it out to dry it 101% before tracing the leak - (possibly from sun-roof when the drains were overwhelmed...)

The centre console top is out to replace the CIG lighter socket, and the wood-grain insert is awaiting varnishing... may as well replace the lamps in transmission quadrant with LEDs... Maybe I should install an inbuilt USB power socket as well...

Don't you love it when simple jobs snowball...

Yes, the hatch to access the EAS ECU needs a re-make with a hinge, - how did you guess that the catch was snapped off ?

Yes for the LEDs and powered USB/s.
In this day and age should also think about an ipod or similar attachment to the media centre - I for one would like to minimise my 80+ CDs.
So who is doing the revarnishing - simple job or some refurbishment at the sametime?

Hmmm, you mean something like this USB power supply...

DC Converter 12V Step Down TO 5V 3A 15W Power Supply Module With Fixed Feet | eBay

Or this one for a dash-cam etc.

If I was burdened with loads of music, a new head-unit with inbuilt USB plug would be the way to go. Put your music onto a thumb-drive which plugs into the (new) receiver. My youngest son bought one recently, a Pioneer for around $170. - Drives 4 speakers, and has RCA outputs for an outboard amplifier.

The USB was only to charge phones, run the occasional GPS or Dash-Cam, leaving the CIG lighter socket free for anything else, like CBs...

I'm doing the tidy-up. Nothing so grand as 'Restoration', more like stripping (heat gun works best) the old plastic stuff off the wood veneer and sanding/varnishing again.

The original was sun-damaged, as all English walnut cracks up - and the wood has lightened off. Worst case would be needing the veneer to be replaced, best would be an accpetable 'vintage' appearance, minus the cracked bits flaking off .
As with re-painting vs polishing an older car.... well-cleaned/cut/polished/waxed often has a nicer and deeper look than merely re-spraying, - despite the 'character' scratches and marks...

    I think I've found a possible water-entry point. Wasn't the sun-roof overflow...
    Not happy.

"...and..." - the first coat of clear varnish is on the walnut. Be aware that the veneer is just that....(RR economically thin) veneer...

The Kia Sante Fe diesel is looking attractive.......

    - Still drying out the undermat, will know more when I persuade myself to look closer. Am operating on strong 'suspicion', not positive proof.
Let's just observe that I've pulled up a rusty piece of what looks like cloth tape, which implies previous damage.
    - Can't see RR extending the budget to the expense of GAFFA tape... !

Rust there can be a symptom of a leak rather than a cause. Is the heater core leaking into the footwells?

    Yes, agree.

Not for at least a couple of years... PO used to have it "maintained" by a backyard mate up the road. - 'Up the garden path' more likely... Heater pipes corroded away to nothing and hoses fell off. Been heater-less 6 months after I bought it.

My nasty suspicious mind leans towards the area above, where the windscreen wipers live. Reason:- - No glycol smell, not that I've any confidence that coolant was consistant... It's seemingly recent, no dank smell either. Nothing. Just wet & rusty in small area.

Car used to live outdoors, parked under trees, trees with thin leaves and little berry-like seed pods. 'Nuff said...

Carpet appears to be one piece, still deciding if I should cut it (to get matting out) or go the whole hog and pull lower dash out etc and replace the heater matrix/connectiong pipes.

Last rusty car I had was the '67 Crown, in the spare wheel well. Back when I had lots of hair. Brown, not white....
Getting too old and grumpy for this !

if my memory serves correctly, (often it doesn't) I believe you have to remove the whole dash to remove the heater matrix.
    PITA job :/

But ideal to see where the water is coming from and what is coming next on the maintenance schedule.
