    gas or fuel or duel

    hi

so currently my rangie has a small fuel tank behind right wheel (40l or something) and twin gas tanks underneath where fuel tank was.

im getting it registered and cant find where it was last tested so spoke to a gas man and he said they should be on the cylinders but being under the car a bitch to find. he also advised that if they need retesting i could be up for $750 - $1000 which makes me think is it even worth having gas. he however told me i could move the gas into the rear and gain more litres plus install a fuel tank which would give me heaps more.

the next issue that i am unsure of is as they would have been tested in victoria and the car is now on the NSW /Qld border does that make them void?

do you think gas is worth it anymore or just go back to fuel? would like to here your thoughts.

I think it would depend on how many KM you plan to drive it each year. With LPG prices soaring, and the ratio of gas v petrol used, it would be getting borderline I would think if you had to spend big dollars sorting it.

If you do a few k's and can live with loosing some room in the back, a new tank in the back may be the most cost effective way to go. You can then shove a full sized petrol tank back in too.

If it just a weekend toy, I'd just ditch the gas all together.

the truck will only really be a weekend warrior no big touring trips more drive to a park and play.

had a look for a fuel tank at the moment any places you know of? would be good with no gas as can go to my mate for rego each year if i do it in NSW which is a lot easier.

what would you need to do to change it back to fuel only though im guessing it would need to be done by a mechanic not me even though having a land rover has near made me a mechanic

can you sell the gas kit?

I think that fellow was having a bit of a lend.
I had my tank tested recently. They said they had to take the tank out, but they didn't.
$300 it cost me. I can see the value if they had taken the tank out.
Anyway, $300. That's $30 per year. I had gas put on because it was the daily drive. Now it's one of the toys. As Gav said, if it's a toy, ditch the BBQ juice. I did that on the 101.

yeah i think so too. i jumped underneath and had a good look at where i could reach but no markings. next step is to drop the cage holding them and see if there is anything up the top of the tanks. where do they use have the test mark/stamp?

was thinking of disconnecting them both and taking them in to a gas place to test should cost nothing near what he said thats if it can be done.

You're most likely to find a test date on the left hand tank. There is usually a small aluminium plate attached to the valve guard. Some fitters remove the guard and reposition the plate on either the bracketry or adjacent to the valves. Use a strong torch and a mirror to look for the plate. Once you've found the plate on the LH tank it should be similar for the RH tank.

Trade price for basic tank tests is around $100 each, then plus the replacement fittings (if any) and install labour are on top of that. I'd shop around a bit before junking the system. I bet the price of LPG will start to drop in a couple of months as the northern winter season comes to a close.

    cheers

spoke to 3 people today and got the same results one bloke was decent enough to give some advise on where to look and suggested going back to fuel as the twin tanks cost twice as much and hold less then a single large tank. i was thinking of taking them out myself and taking them to someone to test as they all say the labour is the major cost.

i wouldnt mind keeping them as they are in and there but if its going to cost over 500 to have them tested i would probably be better off going back to fuel only.

im not giving up yet haha

so i did another search for this stamp. the gauges are on the sides of the tank and was told look near them to no avail. searched everywhere i could reach with torch and a small camera.

i thought i could just take it done to the rego place and see what they say or pull the tanks out myself to search areas i couldnt get too.

i started work on dropping the tanks and can already see why the labour would be so much haha

got stuck on 2 bolts im having trouble with as need that size spanner that has gone missing out of the tool box.

surely if they where stamped they would be in a place to see clearly which leads me to believe they are out of date. it was registered in vic around 2010 so im sure vic would have made sure they where or is it more lenient down that way

    cheers for the responses guys

Nothing is easy about rego in VIC! I'm getting my tank tested for $120 on Tuesday. The price you got was a load of BS! Take it to someone who knows what they are talking about.

My tank is inside behind the back seat, but the price was the same in both locations. They did mention it was money for jam testing internal tanks though.

I just had a thought! I'm in Vic and my car was fitted with gas before I bought it by a place called Crany gas. (In Cranbourne) The reason I know this is because they pot riveted a compliance stamped plate to the front of my car where the VIN plate is. It has their name and date of gas compliance stamped on it. Maybe the reason you cannot find your stamp date is because it is not actually on the tank? Check the engine bay for a compliance plate.

I'm not sure if my tank has one as well because I just went by the date on the above described plate.

    GOOD LUCK!
