Swivel seal
I am putting together the front end of a 73 RRC and unfortunately I did not pull it apart, so I have what may sound like a strange question.
The swivel seal is a loose fit in the housing. Does this mean that it relies on the seal retaining plate putting tension on the seal and the addition of some sealant to stop oil leaking from around the outside of the seal?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

The swivel seal is loose so that it can be adjusted after resetting the swivel preloads - so yes, the plate holds it in position.
Do the plate bolts up finger tight to start with so the seal it centralized on the ball.
I've never had to use sealant on the edge of the seal.

Thanks very much for the response. That makes sense as to why the seal is loose.
