    Another ignition module failure?

    Hi Guys,

    Any thoughts welcome...
I figure I have a failed lucas ignition amp on my 89 Vogue which has been running fine for ages and just got home from a 2600km trip without so much as a hiccup. Went to the shops today and all was fine until I was halfway out of the carpark and the engine dropped to what felt like 3 or 4 cylinders and sounded terrible. Let the car idle home in low range (not really any traffic around here) and after about 15 mins it was like someone flicked a switch and was running perfectly again.

Went through all the basic stuff, cleaning grounds etc, checking leads etc etc and all is good. Went for a test drive and ran fine for 5 mins then crapped out again.

Sounds like time to convert to the Bee-Utey Bosch option....

    Cheers, Charles

Probably. Do check all the connections around the coil for tightness first, though. Otherwise, Go Bosch!

Bee Utey, all the connections are tight and clean, so leaning toward the amp.

Don't bother waiting.. it has/will fail. Not only but also 'now' is a good time to cast a beady eye over the dizzy cap and rotor arm. - From memory, the Bosch GB 864 rotor is a preferred replacement. From your friendly FORD dealer.

Genuine distributor cap if still available, as they're supposed to be better than aftermarket ones.

Put a Bosch/B-U kit in mine, new leads, rotor and plugs. Highly recommended and Tech-Support is excellent. So yes, I am biased...

Or it may be a loose connector(s) on your fuel injectors or harness

Or fuel pump. But I'd come to the same conclusion about the ignition module it was me. I've replaced mine like Bee Utey suggested in my 86 RRC and it made a huge difference.

    Jazzman,
Fuel pump is running...but I don't have gear here to do proper flow / pressure test. My previous long term 89 in Australia killed 2 fuel pumps and they both "just stopped" and that was that, no partial running...just dead - and both times a loooong way from home

    Fuel pump test methods?

To be on the safe side, are there any basic tests to check fuel pump is ok....like delivering x amount of fuel in x seconds of cranking?

Do it. Mine even sounded better backing it out the garage afterwards.

The original banana shaped 4 pin ignition modules were actually made by GM I thought?
    I honestly would've thought they'd be ok.

I'd be looking at the pickup/hall effect sensor in the dizzy maybe?
As the vac advance moves, the wires to the pickup move with it, and fatigue/break over time.

Maybe that's the issue, or the pickup is going faulty.
What about the coil, is it still original?
